The critically acclaimed comedy Abbott Elementary returns for its second season this fall! The excitement is palpable for viewers who fell in love with the series from the get-go. And, given the amount of buzz and praise the Quinta Brunson created show has garnered, we expect its audience to continue to grow as more and more people tap into its magic.

Last season, we were introduced to the struggling Philadelphia elementary school that bears the show’s name. It’s a place where the teachers do what they can with the resources available to them as the try to navigate the hilariously inept actions of their principal. Brunson plays Janine Teagues, a mid-twentysomething chock full of optimism and idealism who lacks the experience and respect she’d like, but she’s growing.

Her role model is Barbara Howard (Sheryl Lee Ralph), who’s an exemplary educator at the school who would like Janine to chill a bit more and be aware of her own limitations and that of the school district. Along with Melissa, Jacob, and Gregory, these two women work to provide an education to the students in their care. Unfortunately, Principal Ava Coleman–a standout role played by Janelle James–is often impeding that mission.

The finale of the first season put Janine on a path to grow more into herself which has viewers excited for what season 2 has to offer. Here’s what we know about the second season of the series!

Season 2 premieres Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 9 p.m. ET on ABC. Next day streaming will be available on Hulu.

Abbott Elementary season 2 plot details

It looks like the second season of the show is partially going to focus on Janine figuring out who she is outside of her relationship with Tariq. He was a large part of her life and part of growing up is learning how to stand on your own and embody the best version of yourself. For Janine, that’d be growing not only in her work life but also personally.

Of course, that doesn’t mean we won’t be seeing her and Gregory’s relationship continue to be fostered on the show. But, whether or not it’ll evolve into a romance isn’t a guarantee. We, however, can’t wait to see their dynamic in season 2. Especially given the new season will see the audience getting a look at the characters’ home lives.

Matt Webb Mitovich shared the following in his Inside Line round-up for TVLine:

"We just spoke to executive producers Justin Halpern and Patrick Schumacker at the HCA TV Awards, and they said to expect to see in Season 2 (premiering Wednesday, Sept. 21) more of where characters live, and maybe meet new relatives and friends outside of the school environment. Bonus teaser: “We do have some special guest stars that I think will surprise people, specifically in the premiere,” Halpern previewed."

Abbott Elementary season 2 first look

With September around the corner, the Fall TV promo machine is about to kick into high gear for the broadcast networks. As such, Abbott Elementary has a first look available to fans and prospective viewers to enjoy.

While it doesn’t show footage from the new season, it is set to “Motown Philly” by Boyz II Men and reunites us with the Abbott crew in time for the new school year. We can’t wait to return to this hilarious workplace comedy on Sept. 21!
