Blue Bloods season 13 premieres Friday, Oct. 7 at 10 p.m. ET on CBS, and it’s bringing with it some changes for the Reagan family. Specifically, a problem that involves partners in life and at work, Jamie and Eddie. But, don’t worry, this isn’t about marital issues. It has to do with their jobs at the precinct.

While there’s no law that says the two can’t work together, it’s not customary for married couples to do so. Up until season 13, the pair have skirted that unwritten rule. However, the new commanding officer–Sgt. McNichols played by Stephanie Kurtzuba–is going to enforce this custom.

TVLine reports that Blue Bloods showrunner Kevin Wade previewed what’s set to happen when answering an Insider Line reader question. Here’s what we know. If you’d rather avoid finding out early how this issue is handled in the season, stop reading here!

Will Jamie and Eddie be split-up in Blue Bloods this season?

Yes, Jamie and Eddie will be split up, but not by one of them having to leave the 29th. While Sgt. McNichols does state, “One of you is going to transfer by the end of the day,” this will play out in the form of Jamie being promoted. He’ll step into the role of Field Information Officer.

This position at the precinct means he’ll be a plain clothes cop who determines whether someone under arrest would be valuable as an informant for the police. It’ll be Jamie’s job to suss out who’s an asset to the department and will be given a break if they cooperate and who should be sent on to the DA.

Wade went on to say this will be a “an interesting bit of diplomacy and hard-nosed policing, and a fishing expedition” for Jamie as a character. For viewers, this role change will likely come with a change in dynamics and a period of acclimating for the married couple as well.
