What is Goodnight Mommy on Prime Video about?

Prime Video is bringing us a new psychological thriller, and it really brings with it the creepiest of vibes just from watching the trailer. Goodnight Mommy premieres Friday, Sept. 16 on the streamer.

The movie stars Naomi Watts, who also executive produces, twin brothers Cameron and Nicholas Crovetti, and Peter Hermann. The upcoming production is based on the 2014 Austrian  psychological horror of the same name. Goodnight Mommy is written by Kyle Warren, with director Matt Sobel taking charge behind the scenes.

V.J. Guibal, Nicolas Brigaud-Robert, Joshua Astrachan, and David Kaplan take on producing duties with executive producers Veronika Franz, Severin Fiala, Kyle Warren, Matt Sobel, Derrick Tseng, Sébastien Beffa, and François Yon.

What is Goodnight Mommy on Prime Video about?

When twin brothers arrive at their mother’s isolated country home, they discover her face is covered in surgical bandages. She explains it’s due to a recent cosmetic surgery, but the two young boys immediately feel like something is off.

Suddenly, there are new rules and behaviors coming from their mom – setting new house rules, smoking in her bathroom, and ripping up a drawing her son gave her. The brothers know those are things their loving mother would never do. As her behavior starts to grow increasingly erratic, they begin to suspect the woman isn’t their mother at all. When the “mother” turns violent, the police still don’t believe the children are in danger. So it’s up to the boys to uncover who they’re really living with.

The trailer reveals that only the “mother’s” eyes, mouth, and nose show, the barn and bedroom are off limits, and the brave boys end up confronting this mystery woman. Who is this and what happened to their real mom? Also why in the world was she peeling back her own skin?

Goodnight Mommy will be released Friday, Sept. 16 on Prime Video.
