The world of cinema has given us more memorable moments than we can count over the years. Standout characters have become a part of pop-culture and the most memorable individuals and scenes have been woven into the fabric of our society. While there are many genres that make movie watching such an enjoyable experience, one of my favorites is undoubtedly the crime drama genre. A personal favorite is Dead Presidents.

Over the years, the idea of what constitutes a crime drama has splintered in many different directions, which has led to a wide variety of films. More traditional versions include classics such as The Godfather Trilogy,  while modern, suspense filled adaptations include thrillers like Copshop. One thing’s for certain, the best films in this genre feature a beginning that draws the audience into the story, followed by a subplot that keeps them guessing about what will happen next.

Dead Presidents is the most underrated film the genre has produced

Recently, as I pondered the multitude of films that fall into this category, I began thinking “Which film could be considered the most underrated crime drama?” The answer I came up with is 1995’s Dead Presidents. Not only does the film feature a well developed story, there are multiple plot twists and the action scenes keeps the audience on the edge of their seats.

Over the years, this film seems to have been lost in the shuffle of mid 90’s thrillers that made a splash at the box office but did not quite achieve cult-classic status. However, I believe the most accurate word to describe this film is underappreciated. Let’s take a closer look at why Dead Presidents is the most underrated production of the crime film genre.
