After months of me talking about it, the entire world is about to experience Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul. I’m excited to share that I spoke to Adamma (writer/director) and Adanne Ebo (producer), and one of the film stars, Nicole Beharie.

Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul follows the first lady (Regina Hall) of a Southern Baptist megachurch who together with her husband Pastor Lee-Curtis Childs, once served a congregation in the tens of thousands. However, a scandal hit the church causing them to close, and now they have to attempt to make the biggest comeback religion has ever seen. The film stars Regina Hall, Sterling K. Brown, Austin Crute, and Nichole Beharie.

"Excerpt from my review: Adamma Ebo is a name to watch out for in the future when it comes to writing and directing. Watching how this was shot and how she moved the camera to enrich the story, you wouldn’t know that this was her first feature film. She perfectly laid out this script with these two characters, who are so easy to hate but had us so engulfed in their story, journey, and clinging onto every word."

Hidden Remote sat down with Adamma and Adanne Ebo, and Nichole Beharie about their roles in the film Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul.

Check out the video version of the interview here.

Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul creators and Nicole Beharie talk the satirical film

Hidden Remote: One of the more profound things in your script was the criticism of the church while highlighting the importance of the church to so many, how did you find that balance in the writing process?

Adamma Ebo: I think it’s because we are balancing it within ourselves. We have so much to say about organized religion that we are highly critical of, but there is so much about it that is valuable to us and still is. We find it beautiful and moving, and both of those things can exist at once. So I think it’s about making sure the positive overtakes the negative, but it doesn’t always and that the institution could be doing better.

Hidden Remote: What is the collaborative process like with your sister?

Adanne Ebo: It’s natural and not much different from our regular relationship. We always say that it feels more unnatural not to be working together. Honestly, it doesn’t feel like working with another person.

Hidden Remote: What about the role of Shakura made you want to play the part?

Nichole Beharie: Shakura speaks to the new wave of church-going and women in the church. I thought it was really interesting how I call it the “velvet glove,” how smooth she is about things, so care-free, light and fun, but at the same time very ambitious. So that was what really drew me to her in particular.
