We are kicking off the fall season with a strong list of new movies that are hitting theaters and streaming platforms. Below, I share a quick list featuring six September movies to watch and three to skip, because, if we’re being honest, they’re not always worth it.

Every month, many new movies come out, whether in theaters or on streaming platforms. Plus, you must factor in all the TV shows that are coming out or reoccurring. It can be a lot to consume. We try our best to take the list of movies set to come out and let you know which films we think you should check out and the ones we think you can put on the back burner.

New September movies to watch

Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul – In Theaters and Peacock Sept. 2

I may never stop talking about this movie. I saw it twice back at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival, and I recently rewatched it before my interview with The Ebo sisters. Honk for Jesus gives us one of the best performances of the year from Regina Hall and I hope each of you seeks this film out, whether in theaters or Peacock .

The Woman King – In Theaters Sept. 16

Viola Davis + The Woman King Trailer + her kicking ass and taking names = SIGN ME UP. Davis is one of the best working actors in all of Hollywood and anytime she is attached to a project, it is automatically must see. I am intrigued by so much about this film, including the story that the movie is based on. I truly can’t wait to see this one on the big screen.

Lou – On Netflix Sept. 23

Allison Janney teams up with Jurnee Smollett to hunt down the person that kidnapped Smollett’s child. I didn’t know much about the film until the trailer was released and the unlikely pairing looks as if they are going to provide us with a delightful little thriller.

Don’t Worry, Darling – In Theaters Sept. 23

When you have Florence Pugh, Harry Styles, Chris Pine and Olivia Wilde all in the same movie, you surely know people (including me) will be lined up to check this one out. I LOVED the trailer and the premise has this incredible mystery-style thriller to it that isn’t something we get a lot of in films anymore. I think we are all ready for this one to come out.

Bros – In Theaters Sept. 30

Nicholas Stoller (Neighbors 2, Sex Tape, Night School) pairs with Billy Eichner to write the brand new bromantic comedy Bros. The film is based on two men with commitment problems attempting to start a relationship together. Eichner is one funny dude and throw him together with Luke Macfarlane, and we could be looking at a great time at the theaters.

Hocus Pocus 2 – On Disney+ Sept. 30

I am not sure we are friends if you aren’t a fan of the original Hocus Pocus. So I can’t think of a better way to kick off the Halloween season than watching Hocus Pocus 2. We have Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy set to reprise their roles as the Sanderson sisters. They get brought back into modern-day Salem by three young women by accident and they must figure out a way to stop them from wreaking havoc on the world.

September movies to skip

Spider-Man: No Way Home – The More Fun Stuff Version – In Theaters Sept. 2

I love No Way Home as much as the next person, and it was one of my favorite movies last year. However, the fact they are repackaging it and releasing it in theaters with 11 new minutes is a complete fraud. I hope so many people out there take the time to go see Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul or one of the other releases out this weekend. If you see both, good for you, but Sony/Disney don’t need your money. Just rent it on Redbox or something and save yourself $50.

Pinocchio – On Disney+ Sept. 8

We are getting not one but two Pinocchio movies coming out this year. We have the live-action version (this one) and the animated one from Guillermo Del Toro set to hit Netflix later this year. First, I don’t know why we need two of them and second, did we really need a live-action version of this story? I don’t think so. While the cast intrigues me, I won’t be rushing to flip this one on this month.

My Best Friend’s Exorcism – On Prime Video Sept. 30

My Best Friend’s Exorcism, My Aunt’s Exorcism, My Worst Enemy’s Exorcism, you can name these movies whatever you want, and I’ll be sure never to watch them. The only exorcism in a film that has ever been good was the one in the This is the End. Please stop with these movies.

From our list of September movies to watch, which are you the most excited to see? Did we miss any?
