Is Inside Out 2 happening: Will there be an Inside Out 2?

From the moment Inside Out was first released in 2015, the film captivated audiences across the globe grossing $800 million at the global box office. The film was both a smashing success for Disney and Pixar, who for years have been questioned about the possibility of a follow-up project.

In the years that have followed the film’s release, there have been no updates on a potential Inside Out 2 with Pixar president Jim Morris hinting that there were no active talks of a sequel back in 2016 when he told Entertainment Weekly:

"“Most studios jump on doing a sequel as soon as they have a successful film, but our business model is a filmmaker model, and we don’t make a sequel unless the director of the original film has an idea that they like and are willing to go forward on. A sequel in some regards is even harder [than the original] because you’ve got this defined world which, on the one hand, is a leg up, and on the other hand has expectations that you can’t disappoint on.”"

It’s been almost a decade since Inside Out first debuted, but it seems inspiration might have finally struck for the film’s director Pete Docter as it’s looking likely a sequel is finally in the works.

Will there be an Inside Out 2?

Ahead of the Disney and Pixar D23 panel on Friday, Sept. 9, rumors began swirling that Inside Out 2 was finally in the works after Entertainment Insider Puck News reported the sequel was set to be announced during the D23 event. Those rumors were later confirmed during the Disney and Pixar D23 panel when Amy Poehler took to the stage at Hall D23 to confirm Inside Out 2 is indeed happening.

The new film will take place when Riley is a teenager and will feature the return of familiar emotions as well as the introduction of new yet-to-be-confirmed emotions.

Additionally, it has been confirmed the sequel will arrive in theaters in Summer 2024.
