The OG of Disney Animation is about to make her triumphant return! We’re, of course, referring to the fairest of them all herself, Snow White, who became the first Disney princess back in 1937 with the release of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves and who is about to make a splash in theaters once again more than eight decades later.

Following the success of Disney’s recent live-action adaptations of its classic animated films, Snow White is getting a modern retelling as part of the next wave of live-action remakes from the House of Mouse.

This new modern-day retelling from director Marc Webb and writer Greta Gerwig will put a new spin on the modern classic complete with updated spins on the film’s iconic characters and songs — with a dash of new additions added in for good measure!

The Snow White live-action remake will hit theaters in 2024 and we’ve rounded up everything you need to know about the film including its release date, cast and more.

Snow White live-action remake release date

As confirmed by Disney following its presentation at D23, Snow White will release on March 22, 2024, which is just a few short months after the 86th anniversary of the original animated feature that inspired the live-action remake. The film’s spring release should make it a hit for families looking for a new movie to enjoy around spring break season and will lead to what will be a very busy year for Disney.

In addition to releasing its Snow White remake in 2024, Disney will also be releasing Mufasa: The Lion King in 2024 as well as a pair of new Pixar films and a few new Marvel Studios films!

Will the Snow White live-action remake release in theaters or on Disney+?

Although Disney has chosen to release some of its newer films directly to Disney+ as seen most recently with its live-action Pinocchio remake, the current plan is for the Snow White live-action remake to release in theaters. While the movie will open in theaters, it will still eventually make its way to Disney+ for subscribers to enjoy but this will come after the film’s theatrical release.

Will the Snow White remake be a musical?

While Disney has opted to remove musical components from some of its live-action remakes such as 2020’s Mulan, the upcoming Snow White remake will indeed be a musical! As revealed by Rachel Zegler during Disney’s D23 event in September 2022, the film will feature a mix of songs from the original film as well as new songs written for the upcoming film.

Snow White cast (2024)

Leading the cast in the title role of the film is Rachel Zegler (West Side Story). She’ll be joined by Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman) as the Evil Queen and Tony-winner Andrew Burnap, who has joined the cast as a new character named Jonathan. Thus far, there have only been three major casting announcements for the film with additional announcements expected to still be made now that the film is inching closer to its release.

Snow White synopsis (2024)

The current synopsis for Disney’s upcoming Snow White remake doesn’t offer up much context as to what fans can expect from the film which is currently teased as a “Live-action adaptation of the 1937 Disney animated film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.” If the film follows the plot of the original animated film from Disney, fans should expect the following as teased by the synopsis for the 1937 film:

"Exiled into the dangerous forest by her wicked stepmother, a princess is rescued by seven dwarf miners who make her part of their household."

Snow White trailer (2024)

While footage for Disney’s upcoming Snow White live-action remake was screened at D23 in September, no official footage for the film has been released to the general public just yet. This is not uncommon as Disney has been known to debut exclusive first looks to those in attendance at events such as D23 only to make fans around the globe wait months for the first teasers and trailers to arrive.

Given Snow White will release in 2024, we imagine the trailer or first teaser might not arrive until sometime in 2023.
