2022 is only getting sweeter when it comes to Bob’s Burgers. Not only did we finally get the movie, but the season 13 premiere is here as well.

In a way, season 13 of Bob’s Burgers feels like an entirely new chapter. For die-hard fans of the series, it’s our time to return to our favorite underrated burger restaurant with the Belcher family while others are just dipping their toes into the world of the Belchers.

No matter which camp you fall in, there is no denying season 13 of Bob’s Burgers holds a lot of excitement behind it. Along with that, the future of Bob’s Burgers is a bit uncertain as there are ongoing talks with Disney.

To kick off season 13 though, it would only be right to pair the Belchers against each other in a classic premiere face-off.

Here’s a look back at the season 12 Bob’s Burgers premiere from 2021

In Sept. 2021, season 12 of Bob’s Burgers premiered. The season started off with an episode entitled “Manic Pixie Crap Show.” The episode is a Louise x Millie episode which we frankly don’t get enough of. It follows Louise as she grapples with the fact that she owes Millie a favor and it results in her being involved in the Pixie Princess Promenade.

The only catch is that Millie is banned and Louise is determined to undermine everything. As with most episodes though, Louise realizes her lesson that maybe some people enjoy Pixie Princess Promenade and that there’s nothing wrong with her for not enjoying it. Eventually, Louise realizes her mistake, takes the blame, and even tries to get Millie back into the group. Overall, it’s a pretty great Louise episode, especially with the final few moments she shares with Tina.

With the brief look back at season 12, it’s only right to discuss the season 13 premiere of Bob’s Burgers entitled, “To Bob, or Not to Bob.” From this point on, there will be spoilers for the episode so this is your warning if you haven’t watched.

The Bob’s Burgers season 13 premiere puts the Belchers on stage

“To Bob, or Not to Bob” begins with Bob and Tina spending Friday together, sharpening knives which Louise is extremely jealous about but they’re interrupted by Mr. Fischoeder.

He tells a story about how he believes Felix stole their father’s trophy and he explains that he’s trying to get him to confess, but he wants to recruit the Belchers to help put on a play in which Felix will admit what he’s done. Bob doesn’t agree even after Mr. Fischoeder decides to give them a month of free rent and to use the space next door.

While Bob’s sleeping that night, he ends up having a dream which convinces him to decide and take Mr. Fischoeder up on his offer. Fischoeder casts the entire family aside from Linda who is directing and they begin rehearsing with some mixed results, especially Bob who Linda can’t stop critiquing. On the following night, Bob has another dream in which he sees how much good expanding the restaurant does but realizes he ends up leaving behind his original calling.

The following day, Louise wants to switch roles but Linda shuts it down and Bob begins to feel apprehensive about moving into the space next door. The play goes on with everyone doing a great job until Bob and Louise both have an outburst during the play. Bob explains that he doesn’t want to expand the restaurant and Louise wants to be able to sharpen the knives. Eventually, Felix admits that he stole the trophy.

The episode ends with Bob and Linda agreeing that they don’t care much about the expansion but about making each other happy. As for Tina and Louise, they work together to create an award for Bob even though Louise might have learned a bit more about knives than Bob wanted.

Which Bob’s Burgers season premiere reigns supreme?

For once, this one seems a bit easy for me and I have to say that I vastly preferred the season 13 premiere of Bob’s Burgers over season 12. However, there are a few similarities worth noting which are that both stories feature Louise in some capacity and both feature characters we enjoy and are familiar with.

“To Bob or Not To Bob” put such a unique twist on Felix and Calvin’s relationship, especially after the movie. While it would have been nice to see a cameo from Grover, the episode was equal parts funny with the moments focused on the play and heartwarming with Bob and Linda having a moment along with Tina and Louise. Of course, Gene was the comedic relief but that’s nothing new.

Overall, “To Bob or Not to Bob” felt like something fresh and new while “Manic Pixie Crap Show” was more of the same. Regardless, neither episode is bad and is a good place to start off the season. It does make a lot of sense why season 13 would start off this way considering how the plotline of the movie played out. For me, what tipped the episode over the edge was the play. The entire play scene was hilarious and completely absurd which is where Bob’s Burgers thrives.

Bob’s Burgers airs Sundays on Fox at 9/8c.
