Fire Country: Why does Bode want to leave Edgewater?

Fire Country premiered Friday on CBS with a pilot episode that immediately drew viewers into a story that involved a secret that Bode had been holding close to his vest until its reveal.

The series opener saw him make an appeal for parole. Though it was denied, he was given an opportunity to shave time off his sentence by joining the firefighting program. Bode was into the idea until he realized the bus he was on was headed to Edgewater, California.

Determined to get placed elsewhere, Bode risked adding more time to his sentence by asking his friend Freddy to get him a phone. He planned on using it to get in contact with his lawyer so he could get transferred, but it was confiscated before he could use it.

When asked why he’d take a risk like this, Bode told Perez that he needed to leave Edgewater because it’s his hometown. It was clear that there was more to the story, but they didn’t have time to get into it because the Buckeye fire was blazing out of control.

However, we did get an answer later in the premiere for why Bode was desperately trying to get out of town. Here’s the story as we know it so far.

Why does Bode want to leave Edgewater on Fire Country?

After Bode saved Jake from certain death, the two former friends got into it over Riley, the girl both he and Eve had been speaking of earlier in the pilot. By this point, we knew she was important to Bode, too, because he has her name tattooed on his body.

Freddy had thought the reason Bode wanted to leave town was because of a girl, but this wasn’t romantic. Turns out, Riley is not only Jake’s ex-girlfriend and Eve’s best friend, but also Bode’s sister. He’d been the one who picked her up after Jake had broken up with her. He lost control of the car when he was trying to keep her from getting out of the vehicle and going back to Jake.

Edgewater holds bad memories for Bode because of this tragic night, but he also hadn’t faced his parents, Sharon and Vincent, in what must be some time. While Sharon hugged him as soon as she saw him, his dad was stand-offish and asked him what he was even doing back in town.

Obviously, there’s more to this story, but what’s been revealed to us so far on Fire Country is already heartbreaking. We’re preparing for even more heartbreaking revelations from this fractured family in episode 2.
