How many episodes are in The Winchesters?

The Winchesters begins tonight. It’s the Supernatural spin-off we didn’t think we’d get. Just how many episodes will be in the first season?

It’s time to see the untold love story finally get told. The Supernatural prequel spin-off tells us how John and Mary Winchester met. Dean tells us the story as he looks into his parents’ tale in more detail.

There are certainly some changes to canon. We’re holding out judgment about that until we see how Jensen Ackles fixes the problem he knows he’s created. Now we just need to know how many episodes we’ll get for the story.

The Winchesters Season 1 episode count

We tend to see new shows get a shorter episode count than established shows. As networks see how well a series performs, the shows can get extended. Is that what will happen with The Winchesters?

Entertainment Weekly shares that The Winchesters will have 13 episodes. It doesn’t sound like it will get an extension at a later date, though. It doesn’t matter how well the show performs.

We’re expecting the Supernatural spin-off to perform well, but The CW is going through some big changes. It’s just been acquired by Nexstar, and there are changes to how the lineup is going to look. After all, The Flash and Superman & Lois have been held for the midseason, which seems crazy considering their fanbases.

The CW switched to 13 episodes for a lot of shows last year. This was to get the schedule back to normal after the pandemic, but it looks like it was positive for a lot of the shows. The 22-episode format was great for a procedural-style series, but it doesn’t work as well for serialized shows. The 13-episode format, which was traditional for midseason shows, works well as there isn’t as much need for filler episodes.
