Live TV ratings for Oct. 3 to 9: Quantum Leap ticks up, Fire Country debuts well

“Pilot” – Max Thieriot stars as Bode Donovan, a young convict seeking redemption and a shortened prison sentence by joining a prison release firefighting program in Northern California where he and other inmates are partnered with elite firefighters to extinguish massive, unpredictable wildfires across the region. It’s a high-risk, high-reward assignment, and the heat is turned up when Bode is assigned to the program in his rural hometown, where he was once a golden all-American son until his troubles began. Five years ago, Bode burned down everything in his life, leaving town with a big secret. Now he’s back, with the rap sheet of a criminal and the audacity to believe in a chance for redemption with Cal Fire, on the series premiere of FIRE COUNTRY, Friday, Oct. 7 (9:00-10:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network and available to stream live and on demand on Paramount+*. Series also stars Billy Burke, Kevin Alejandro, Diane Farr, Stephanie Arcila, Jordan Calloway and Jules Latimer. Pictured (L-R): Kevin Alejandro as Manny Perez and Max Thieriot as Bode Donovan. Fire Country, SWAT, Walker, and Grey’s Anatomy were on the list of shows to air new or return last week. How did they fare in the live TV ratings?

Fall TV is now back in full swing. These last couple of weeks have brought back The CW shows and debuted the stragglers. Last week, we got to see the returns of Grey’s AnatomyStation 19, SWAT, Blue Bloods, NCIS: Los Angeles, and Walker, along with the debuts of Alaska Daily, Fire Country, and Walker Independence.

A few of the returns were this week. We’ll get to those live TV ratings next week. For now, we’re just looking at Oct. 3 to 9.

As before, we’re not concerned about the shows that have already been confirmed renewed. We are also not looking at unscripted programming. It’s all about the shows that we worry about every season.

ABC live ratings: Grey’s Anatomy returns, Alaska Daily debuts

TGIT got back in full swing this week. We also saw the return of The Good Doctor, which had to answer that major cliffhanger at the end of the fifth season. There is some good news. It was up from The Good Doctor Season 5 finale, although a little down from the Season 5 premiere. It’s now whether the show can keep the viewership.

TGIT returned, and Grey’s Anatomy continues to hold the top spot on the list of dramas on ABC. Station 19 also continues to hold the second spot. The ratings were down a little, but that’s normal for the start of a new season. Grey’s is a reboot season, so it will be interesting to see how things perform over the next few weeks.

Alaska Daily is the highest rated new series on the network so far. It debuted with a 0.32 demo and 3.58 million viewers. This is a good sign for a timeslot that is often problematic. We’ll have to see how the viewership holds for this crime drama.

“Thai Hard” – During a trip to Bangkok to train alongside Thailand’s premiere S.W.A.T. team, Hondo and his former military buddy Joe (guest star Sean Maguire) stumble upon a wide-ranging heroin operation with ties to Los Angeles and find themselves on the run from a powerful drug kingpin, on the season premiere of S.W.A.T., Friday, Oct. 7 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network and available to stream live and on demand on Paramount+. CBS live TV ratings: Ghosts down, Blue Bloods mixed

There were a few returning shows and a new series last week. SWAT, Blue Bloods, and NCIS: Los Angeles returned last week, and they had some mixed results. We have to remember that SWAT and Blue Bloods are Friday night dramas so they don’t perform as well in the TV ratings as a lot of other shows, but they have remained relatively strong.

Premieres are often compared to each other to give fans an idea of a starting line. SWAT was down 15% in the demo but up 11% in the audience compared to the previous season premiere. Likewise, Blue Bloods was down almost 7% in the demo but up almost 6% in the audience.

When we look at the previous season finales, we still have mixed results. SWAT was up in both figures—moving from a Sunday back to a Friday—while Blue Bloods was down in the demo but up in the audience. There’s nothing to be concerned about just yet.

Like previous years, though, Fridays have gone up in live ratings throughout the night. We usually see the opposite happen on the networks. Fire Country is well placed in the middle, debuting with a 0.40 demo and a 5.9 million viewer audience. We’ll wait to see how the ratings stabilize for the new Max Thieriot series.

NCIS: Los Angeles was hit harder as it moved to the later timeslot. It was down 43% in the demo and 25% in the audience compared to the previous season premiere. When compared to the finale, we saw the demo ticking up a little but the audience down a little.

East New York had its second episode air. This show needs to stabilize, but the metrics are positive. While the demo was down 13%, the audience went up 7%. The downside is that it’s not keeping the strong numbers from The Equalizer lead-in, and that’s what concerns me the most.

I expect to see Ghosts quickly renewed for a third season. It’s the No. 1 comedy in the demo, even though it was down 10% from the season premiere. It was also down 4% in the total audience, but we’re not concerned right now.

FOX TV ratings: Monarch down, The Cleaning Lady up

We’re not worried about most of the animation block, nor are we concerned with 911. It’s all about the midweek dramas and comedies.

Monarch saw a fall during the week, but taking a sneaky peek at the Oct. 10 TV ratings, this isn’t too concerning. This series is the top new drama on FOX, so that’s a good sign for a renewal.

Meanwhile, The Cleaning Lady ticked up last week. It was up by 15% in the demo, which is the highest of the season so far. It was also up 3% in the audience. We’ll need to see what things are like for the rest of the season so far.

The series we have been concerned about this season is The Resident. The show is down toward the bottom of most FOX shows, and this is a worrying sign. The numbers were mixed last week, with a 3% dip in the demo and a 2% uptick in the audience. Maybe pulling people in for the 100th episode will help this series.

Call Me Kat is the most worrying of the shows. Not only did it debut down from last season, but it was also down last week. It dropped by 20% in the demo and then by almost 9% in the audience. What doesn’t help is that this was a midseason series last year. The fact that FOX now has to fill that Thursday timeslot with something could help the series right now.

NBC live ratings: Quantum Leap and Chicago Fire up

Quantum Leap is one of the shows we’re keeping a close eye on as one of the newer shows on NBC. It is at the bottom of NBC shows overall, but the series did just land an extended order from 12 episodes to 18. This is a good sign, and it’s thanks to it being the No. 1 drama on Peacock. The show itself did tick up 11% in the demo last week, but it was down 4.4%.

It shouldn’t be surprising to hear that Chicago Fire ticked up in both the demo and the audience. The trailer promoted a huge death, and that’s exactly what we saw. We also saw Chicago PD tick up in both metrics with the exit of Jesse Lee Soffer. Of course fans wanted to see live how that exit was going to go down.

Sadly, La Brea ticked down in both of the metrics. It was down 10% in the demo and almost 3% in the audience. It still isn’t quite at the bottom, but this is a concerning sign considering the Chicagos and Law and Orders continue to perform better. Tuesday nights are competitive, though. We’ll have to see how the streaming numbers are doing.

The CW live ratings: Walker down, Walker Independence mixed

Walker Season 3 premiered on Thursday, Oct. 6. Sadly, it was down compared to the Season 2 premiere by 27% in the demo and 20% in the audience. However, it was up in the demo compared to the finale and slightly down in the audience. It did debut as the top show last week, though.

Walker Independence struggled with just a 0.05 demo rating (although that’s only 0.02 behind Walker). The show’s 0.6 million audience may help the show as it is just behind Walker‘s and above all other shows that aired last week.

Kung Fu debuted its third season. It’s important to note that the series has moved from the midseason to the fall, which is going to impact things. However, The CW would have wanted the impact to be up. Instead, the Kung Fu Season 3 premiere was down 30% in the demo and 35% in the audience compared to the Season 2 premiere. It was up from the finale, though!

DC’s Stargirl continues to perform mixed but well for the network. It was down 16% in the demo and 5% in the audience, but it sat in second place among the shows on the network.

The Canadian acquisitions Family Law and Coroner aired their second seasons. Family Law was up 200% in the demo and 27% in the audience, taking it up past everything else that aired in the demo. Just on average, it’s down the list of shows. Coroner was also up 100% in the demo but down 4.75% in the audience. We don’t worry as much about the acquisitions, but it’s good to see them ticking up last week.

It is hard to make a call about The CW right now. The Nexstar deal could change everything.
