The beginning of October saw a new trailer and an official release date dropping for the upcoming Netflix series Wednesday.

Whilst we know the show is based on the iconic Addams Family characters, do you have to watch The Addams Family movie before watching Wednesday?

Here’s what we know!

Do you have to watch The Addams Family before the Wednesday series?

As far as we can tell so far, it seems that no, you don’t need to have watched The Addams Family before Wednesday. There have been multiple variations of the spooky, kooky family, from the original comic strips of The New Yorker, to four different television adaptations before Wednesday, to the iconic ’90s movies starring Angelica Houston, Raul Julia, Christopher Lloyd, and Christina Ricci.

Wednesday is acting as director Tim Burton’s brand new reimagining of the characters, starring Jenna Ortega (YOU) as the titular character, Catherine Zeta-Jones (The Mask of Zorro) as Morticia Addams, Luis Guzmán (Narcos) as Gomez Addams and Gwendoline Christie (Game of Thrones) as headteacher Larissa Weems.

The show, if done right, should be able to stand on its own, without a reliance on its audience having previously consumed content starring the Addamses.

There is a lot of history and information surrounding the bizarre characters, with Collider exploring some of the things that may be useful to know going into the show. However, the show is looking to be a fresh new take, and should be enjoyed as a spooky treat for a whole range of watchers when it premieres on Nov. 23.

Will Christina Ricci be in Wednesday on Netflix?

The Wednesday Addams from the ’90s movies, Christina Ricci, is also starring in the show. Viewers who have never seen the movies need not worry, the latest trailer confirmed that her character is entirely new and perhaps simply acts as a fun Easter egg for fans of the films. Ricci will play Ms. Thornhill, a teacher at Wednesday’s school.
