Heartstopper star Joe Locke joins Marvel’s Agatha: Coven of Chaos

Exciting Marvel casting news has hit us this week, with Joe Locke, the star of Netflix’s hit show Heartstopper, revealing that he has officially joined the cast of the upcoming Disney+ show Agatha: Coven of Chaos. Here’s all you need to know about the actor and the Marvel Cinematic Universe project!

Who is Joe Locke?

Locke, a 19-year-old actor hailing from the Isle of Man, skyrocketed to fame in April 2022 as the protagonist of the television series Heartstopper. Portraying Charlie Spring in the TV adaptation of Alice Oseman’s graphic novels of the same name, Locke played a significant role in accurate, modern LGBTQ+ representation onscreen, alongside cast members such as Kit Connor (Rocketman) and Yasmin Finney.

Despite the Heartstopper role being Locke’s first official television project, the Manx actor shot to stardom, with both the public and celebrities expressing their admiration and their appreciation for his performance and his impact on queer lives. Singer-songwriter Jessie J even went so far as to pause her concert upon spotting Locke in the crowd to deliver a heartfelt message to him, “I just have to say thank you, you won’t understand why, but you are a wonderful person and you’re helping someone really close to me get through a really tough time.”

To many viewers and fans, it was clear that Joe Locke would soon be onto bigger things. That seems to be exactly what has happened, with Locke making his theatre debut with “The Trials” back in August, before being snapped up by Marvel for a huge new MCU project, Agatha: Coven of Chaos.

Joe Locke joins Agatha: Coven of Chaos cast

As the spinoff of the hugely popular Marvel show Wandavision, Agatha: Coven of Chaos will be the eighth installment of the MCU’s Phase Five of releases. The show will follow the villainous character of Agatha Harkness, introduced as the surprise antagonist to Wanda Maximoff (Scarlet Witch, played by Elizabeth Olsen) in the 2021 Disney+ show. This even came with an Emmy-winning theme song, “Agatha All Along”.

Whilst there is very little information on the plot of Coven of Chaos, it is confirmed that Kathryn Hahn will be returning to play the titular Salem witch, Agatha. Emma Caulfield Ford will also be reprising her Wandavision role of Sarah Proctor, the Westview citizen who portrayed Dottie in Wanda’s sitcom world. Who is Joe Locke playing in Agatha: Coven of Chaos on Disney+?

Along with the show’s plot, Locke’s role is also to-be-confirmed, with Marvel keeping everything top secret for the time-being. However, Deadline have described the 19-year-old as “the male lead” alongside Hahn. Theories and debates over his character are already abundant; some predict Locke will portray the villain Mephisto, whilst others are set on the idea of him as Wanda and Vision’s son Billy, who becomes the superhero Wiccan. With Wiccan as one of Marvel’s most iconic young, gay superheroes, and Deadline revealing that “sources describe the character as a gay teen with a dark sense of humor”, Locke is looking to be a great fit for the character.
