The Detroit Lions have played on Thanksgiving a whopping 83 times, but they don’t exactly have the best track record in Thanksgiving Day games. In fact, you might be surprised to know we’re closing in on a decade since the Lions won their last Thanksgiving Day NFL game.

If you’re wondering when the Lions last won a Thanksgiving Day game, you’ll have to go all the way back to 2016. On Thanksgiving Day 2016, the Lions picked up a win over their division rivals the Minnesota Vikings, defeating the Vikings 16-13.

Funny enough, the Lion faced the Vikings again on Thanksgiving Day in 2017 but it was the Vikings who picked up the win. That game kicked off what has been a multi-year losing streak for the Lions who have since lost to the Bears three times (2018, 2019, and 2021) and to the Texans (2020) and Bills (2022) once.

Detroit Lions Thanksgiving Day record

Heading into their Thanksgiving Day matchup against the Green Bay Packers, the Detroit Lions boast a Thanksgiving Day record of 37-44-2. Of note, most of those wins have come from the team’s earlier days as the Lions are 6-17 since 2000, with the Lions currently on a 7-year losing streak on the Thanksgiving holiday.

While the Lions haven’t had the best of luck in Thanksgiving games in recent years, the team is riding its best winning streak in decades so perhaps this year will be the year the Lions finally break that losing streak with a win over their division rivals!

Today, the Lions will host the Packers at Ford Field in what promises to be a must-see game for Lions fans. The Lions head into their Thanksgiving game with an 8-2 record, making them one of the best teams in the league this season.

Jared Goff and the Lions are hoping to end a 7-year Thanksgiving losing streak by picking up a win over the Packers. However, if there is one thing this season has taught us, you never should count out the underdog. While the Packers might only be 4-6, there’s nothing Jordan Love and the Packers want more than to take down their division rivals!
