Amsterdam follows three friends, a doctor (Bale), a nurse (Robbie), and a lawyer (Washington), who find themselves in the middle of “one of the most shocking secret plots in American history,” 20th Century Studios shares. The trio of friends, who have vowed to always protect each other, are accused of killing someone, which isn’t true according to Bale’s character in the trailer.

The thriller is based on the 1933 political conspiracy, the Business Plot. It was alleged that there were plans to overthrow President Franklin D. Roosevelt and put Smedley Butler up as leader instead. The studio shares that the film “weaves historical fact with fiction.”
