Is Garrett Miller leaving The Cleaning Lady?

Spoilers ahead of The Cleaning Lady season 2 finale

For its entire run The Cleaning Lady season 2 has been a thrill ride with unexpected twists that have dire consequences. True to form, the finale followed this pattern. Thony had to make some hard decisions. As always, her priority has been her family, especially her son, but it’s not possible to control every aspect of this dangerous game she’s been playing since she chose to cover up a murder in order to save her own life.

Falling in with Arman opened a world of possibilities for her regarding Luca’s medical care. However, it also meant dealing with criminals. While the first season kept her mostly on the outer rim of the life her boss (turned friend, turned something too close for a married man to be), this season she’s gone deeper into the gritty, seedy business she’d once been above. There’s also blood on her hands belonging to more than one person.

Unfortunately, Garrett got caught up in the mess of decisions that Thony has had to make this season and we’re not simply talking about Maya’s death. The finale left no one unscathed and Garrett paid the ultimate price.

Is Garrett leaving The Cleaning Lady?

Yes. Garrett did die in the season 2 finale. There won’t be any TV magic that happens allowing him to come back in the third season. Thony’s going to have to live with the consequences of her choices and what that means going forward now that she no longer has her friend and, therefore, the law on her side. In a post-mortem with TVLine, co-showrunner Melissa Carter explained the decision:

"We always said that Thony walks this tightrope between crime and the law, and those two representations are Arman and Garrett. By killing Garrett, we wanted to strip Thony of one of the lifelines she has. After he dies, she no longer has the law on her side, which means when Fiona is deported, she is without Garrett’s protection, and now will have to get Fiona back by using her criminal connections, pushing her further to the dark side. This is, after all, a crime show. There are consequences to decisions made in this world, and no one is ever truly safe."

This does mean that Oliver Hudson, the actor who plays FBI agent Garrett Miller, is leaving the show. Carter and co-showrunner Miranda Kwok did state that this was a difficult decision and one they’d been putting off for some time. Apparently, the network had suggested killing Garrett off at the end of season 1. And Hudson had always been aware that his character would only be around for a season or two, so this was always in the cards.
