HBO Max and Netflix are known for being some of the most popular purveyors of true crime documentaries, but other streaming services are catching up to them, with streamers like Peacock and Hulu releasing their own successful docs in recent years.

Next up, Hulu has an exclusive, three-part docuseries about the Sarah Lawrence cult headed by con man Larry Ray. Stolen Youth: Inside the Cult at Sarah Lawrence will premiere in February 2023, and we have the official trailer and key art to share.

For those unfamiliar with the case, 62-year-old Larry Ray was convicted on charges of sex trafficking, violent assault, extortion, forced labor, and other serious crimes earlier this year after an investigation uncovered Ray’s sinister agenda executives over a decade.

Ray was a prolific con man who used his daughter to gain unprecedented access to young students at the liberal arts college.

What is Stolen Youth: Inside the Cult at Sarah Lawrence about?

Here is the official synopsis shared by Hulu:

"With unprecedented access, STOLEN YOUTH: INSIDE THE CULT AT SARAH LAWRENCE excerpts striking first-hand interviews with conman Larry Ray’s victims and incorporates personal audio tapes and video recordings to tell the story of his grim 10 year influence over a group of young people. The series follows the story from the cult’s origins in 2010 on the Sarah Lawrence campus until its recent demise, when the last members find their own paths to survival."

Stolen Youth will explore the beginnings of the cult from its origins in 2010 to the present, where the survivors are still dealing with the fallout and aftermath of the investigation and subsequent federal trial.

The documentary series’ director Zach Heinzerling recently spoke with Vulture about Stolen Youth and his goals for making the doc:

"“In this case, it’s a psychological prison. When you see videos of these students admitting to these bizarre crimes, it’s hard to know what to make of it. I think the goal is to understand how it happened and to sympathize with the survivors and understand their story in a deeper way — and hopefully learn something about yourself and society.”"

The official trailer for the Hulu Original docuseries shows clips of survivors talking about their experience and how they became attracted to Larry’s insular circle of acolytes. Most of them met Larry through their friend—and Larry’s daughter—Talia. She characterized him as a hero, and the students found themselves seduced by his promises and teachings.

The three-part docuseries Stolen Youth: Inside the Cult at Sarah Lawrence will premiere on Feb. 9, 2023. All three episodes will drop at the same time.
