5 scary Christmas movies to watch (2022)

5. Silent Night, Deadly Night (1984)

This film is everything you’d expect and more from a 80s slasher with a ho, ho, holiday twist.  The film stars Robert Brian Wilson, Lilyan Chauvin, Gilmer McCormick, Toni Nero, Linnea Quigley, Britt Leach. The movie follows a young boy named Billy who witnesses his parents getting killed by Santa Clause. After being warned by his grandpa that Santa punishes those who are naughty, Billy decides to take matters into this own hands.

Its public controversy stemmed from issue with censorship. There are two versions of the film, an unrated and ‘R’ rated version with the MPAA eventually giving it an ‘R’ rating after multiple cuts had been made. Yet, this film turned into a franchise pretty quickly as it developed a cult following and spawned four sequels and as a remake in 2012. There’s also talks of an upcoming reboot being planned as well.

You can watch Silent Night, Deadly Night on Roku with a premium subscription or purchase VOD on Prime Video.

4. Jack Frost (1998)

No, that is not a typo! The lovable snowman on film we all know from childhood has a more frightening iteration that came out of the late 1990s. This cult classic stars Micheal Keaton (Dopesick) and Kelly Preston as the parents to a precocious young boy named Charlie played by Joseph Cross (Licorice Pizza) . When Keaton’s character dies in a car accident, he is reincarnated as a snowman in their family’s front yard. While this film is considered a fantasy family-comedy, there’s no shame in cringing at the animatronic-like snow creature that takes up the screen for the majority of the film.

You can stream Jack Frost now on HBO Max and Prime Video with an AMC+ subscription.

3. Krampus (2015)

The movie stars  Adam Scott (Severence), Toni Collette (The Staircase), David Koechner (Bless This Mess), Allison Tolman (Gaslit), Conchata Ferrell, Stefania LaVie Owen, and Emjay Anthony who portrays Max. The movie is based on the folklore character of the same name and takes place three days before Christmas. Due to his family’s incessant arguing, Max loses his Christmas spirit which awakens Krampus, a creature who punishes naughty kids. This causes the family to reunite in order to defeat Krampus.

Gideon Emery provides the voice of Krampus alongside Seth Green as Gingerbread Man Lumpy, Breehn Burns as Gingerbread Man Dumpy, and Justin Roiland (Solar Opposites) as Gingerbread Man Clumpy.

You can stream the movie now on Peacock and Hulu with premium subscription.

2. The Lodge (2020)

A more recent release in this list, The Lodge is a psychological horror film starring Riley Keough (The Devil All The Time), Jaeden Martell (Mr. Harrigan’s Phone), Lia McHugh (Eternals), Alicia Silverstone (American Horror Stories), and Richard Armitage. The plot follows a soon-to-be stepmother Grace played by Keough. Grace was the sole survivor of a mass suicide, led by her cult-leader father. When Grace, her fiancé and his children go to stay at a rural lodge during Christmas, unexplainable happenings start to occur which are, apparently, connected to her past.

You can stream The Lodge on Hulu with a premium subscription or purchase on VOD on Prime Video.

1. Violent Night (2022)

A more recent release in this list, another Christmas slasher film has entered into the category. The movie stars David Harbour (Stranger Things), John Leguizamo (The Menu), Edi Patterson (The Righteous Gemstones), Cam Gigandet, Leah Brady, and Beverly D’Angelo (National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation). Violent Night is set during the nights leading up to Christmas Day. Harbour embodies a version of Santa Claus who has to fight mercenaries who have taken a wealthy family hostage in their own home.

Violent Night is now available for digital rental or purchase at home on Prime Video.
