2023 is nearly upon us! And, while Netflix typically has a host of documentaries to dive into each month, we’re kicking off the new year with just a handful of offerings. That’s okay though because there’s still enough here to whet the doc appetite of anyone who lives for a full-on look behind the curtain at famous, infamous, and scandalous figures in the public consciousness. Same for unsolved cases, harrowing real world events, and triumphant stories.
You’ll notice this list is heavy on crime docs. The first half of January’s documentaries will be dedicated to Bernie Madoff’s ponzi scheme, Mumbai cops who killed their targets in order to rein in the unchecked power of a crime boss in the ’90s, and a viral sensation’s road from fame to imprisonment.
From there, the docs available skip around genres with a professional tennis docuseries from the team behind F1: Drive to Survive, a personal look at the lives and career of Dutch singing duo, Suzan and Freek, and an intimate love letter to Pamela Anderson.
Pamela, a love story premieres Jan. 31 and centers on the actress’ impact on the entertainment industry. The film will also include a look at her activism and who she is as a doting mother.
