Hulu’s The Drop cast on force majeure and motherhood in an R rated comedy

The Drop -- Lex (“PEN15’s” Anna Konkle) and Mani (“Coming 2 America’s” Jermaine Fowler) are a happily married young couple, running their dream artisanal bakery in Los Angeles and excited about starting a family together. A trip to a tropical island resort for a friend’s destination wedding, coinciding with Lex’s ovulation cycle, feels like the perfect opportunity to conceive. But good vibes and high hopes are cut short when, shortly after their arrival to paradise, Lex accidentally drops her friend’s (Aparna Nancherla, “Search Party”) baby in front of all their friends. Paradise becomes purgatory for our couple as recriminations, passive-aggression and old wounds begin to permeate the island reunion and throw Mani and Lex’s future into deep uncertainty. Hulu has its first original movie of 2023 debuting with The Drop. Hidden Remote sat down with the stars of the movie Jillian Bell, Anna Konkle, Jermaine Fowler, Joshua Leonard, Jennifer Lafleur, and Aparna Nancherla, to talk about the comedy.

The Drop follows Lex and Mani, a married couple who run a bakery. They’re trying to have a baby. The two are on vacation with their friends when Lex accidentally drops a baby and throws everything, including their marriage, for a loop. The movie is co-written by Joshua Leonard and Sarah Adina Smith, the latter also directed the film.

One of the things that I’ve loved over the last few years is Hulu’s willingness to make more dark comedies that ride the line of how far a comedy can go during this era. The Drop has some well-equipped writing, highlighting that hunt for an edginess that we used to see in the early 2000s that most have gotten away from.

The movie works mainly because of the incredible cast. I can’t express enough my love for Jillian Bell. There is something about her deadpan comedy that works perfectly. She has this brilliant ability to have scene-stealing moments in the movies she’s in. I also loved Anna Konkle and Jermaine Fowler’s work in the film, as they had so much more meat on the bone within their characters that made you want to be invested. Overall,The Drop is another hit comedy for Hulu that has some scenes that will have you laughing for days.

The stars of The Drop talk about the upcoming comedy movie.

Hidden Remote: Joshua, you co-wrote this script with director Sarah Adina Smith, where did the idea come from?

Joshua Leonard: Sarah had been obsessed for many years with force majeure and the original Force Majeure, and the notion that this husband, this father kind of breaks the central tenet of our preconception of manhood.

No matter what you think, no matter how evolved you are inside, it feels weird. And everybody knew why it felt weird. And so Sarah was wondering, she was like, what’s the female version of abandoning your family to an avalanche? And she asked Shaheen (her husband), and she said, what do you think I could do? Is there anything I could do after 15-plus years of being together that would make you feel like you had married a dud? And Shaheen, without skipping a beat, said, I don’t know if you dropped a baby. And so that was the seed idea for this movie. And Sarah told me that, and I found it absolutely hilarious and just the dumbest thing we could possibly base a movie on.

Hidden Remote: Anna, what were your initial thoughts upon reading the script?

Anna Konkle: Well, I was three months postpartum at the time, so I had a three-month-old. And I think that’s partly why it was interesting because it was scary, and it was grappling with a lot of the things that I was currently thinking about of, like, unexpected feelings that now I know are pretty universal, but of just, like, questioning your parenting and kind of feeling like you’re barely surviving. And I also love the idea of motherhood being in an R-rated comedic way because it’s often sort of saturated, and there’s all the stuff you’re not supposed to talk about, going through birth and pregnancy and having our little one. So I wanted to talk about it and hear about it, even though it’s a dark piece, but that’s cool to me.

Hidden Remote: Jillian, there is a line that Josh delivers, a line to Lindsey “You have the potential within you to be a baby dropper,” Lindsey’s reaction is priceless, but my question is going to put you on the spot,  “which cast member do you think is capable of dropping a baby?”

Jillian: I’ll tell you who I feel like could get away with it, is Jermaine. I feel like if Jermaine did it, we would say it was probably an accident, and we wouldn’t be mad. If anyone else did it, we would be like, “You Dropped a Baby,” but Jermaine, he is too lovable.
