Every time there’s a big story about a character moving to a new place, there are questions about whether the actor is leaving the show. It’s all come up for Ryan Eggold in New Amsterdam yet again. We saw Max Goodwin announce that he was leaving New York (again!) for Switzerland.
Is Eggold leaving? Well, yes and no. Everyone is leaving the series!
New Amsterdam has been canceled
In a way, yes, Eggold is leaving the series. However, that is not the actor’s choice, and it wasn’t even a show choice. New Amsterdam has been canceled, with the most recent episode working as the series finale.
The news of the cancellation did come in time for the series to wrap up storylines. While it wasn’t the time the show’s writers wanted, it was enough time to make sure there was an ending that was all about the characters we’d come to know and love. We got to see what got Max, Lauren, Reynolds, Iggy, and Elizabeth into the medical field in the first place, and we got to see them focus on their new life.
Everything was left open, in a way. The series finale ended with Luna Goodwin taking over as the Medical Director at New Amsterdam Hospital. We saw no familiar faces, but that doesn’t mean they’re gone. They could be enjoying some time off, or maybe they have retired or moved to other hospitals by that point. It was a sweet ending that leaves things open should NBC want to do a spin-off about Luna Goodwin.
But yes, New Amsterdam has been canceled. The Tuesday, Jan. 17 episodes were the last. Technically, Ryan Eggold has left, just like the rest of the cast.
