What is the new series Night Court on NBC about?

Since CBS’ The Big Bang Theory ended in 2019, we haven’t seen Melissa Rauch in a main television role. Well, we’ve got some great news! If you haven’t heard yet, the Bernadette Rostenkowski-Wolowitz actress now stars in a new role in a new sitcom. Rauch plays Judge Abby Stone in Night Court!

The new NBC series serves as a sequel to the ’80s and ’90s sitcom of the same name. The original show aired from 1984 to 1992 for nine seasons. It focused on the Manhattan municipal court’s staff, court cases, and funny legal practices of Judge Harry Stone.

What is the new series Night Court on NBC about?

Night Court follows Judge Abby Stone (Rauch) whose job is to oversee the night shift of a Manhattan arraignment court. She’s taking on the same role as her father, the late Judge Harry Stone (played by the late Harry Laverne Anderson in the original series), per the synopsis. This judge always sees the best in people and her goal is to “bring order and dignity to the court and reign in its colorful crew of oddballs.”

To help achieve her goal, she asks for night court district attorney Dan Fielding (John Larroquette reprises his role from the original sitcom) to take on a new position as public defender. Now adjusting to a new job and boss, there is actually an empathetic side to Fielding’s “arrogant demeanor.” And Abby is determined to bring that side of him out more.

The series also stars India de Beaufort as Olivia, the court’s “officious assistant district attorney,” Kapil Talwalkar as the court’s clerk Neil, and Lacretta as bailiff Donna “Gurgs” Gurganous.

Night Court airs new episodes Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET on NBC. Episodes are also available to stream on Peacock.
