Day one of the 2023 Sundance Film Festival has arrived, and today, I am reviewing the docuseries from Showtime, Murder in the Big Horn. The three-episode docuseries is set to hit Showtime on February 5th, with all episodes available to stream on February 3. Is the series worth checking out when it releases? Let’s dive in.

Murder in the Big Horn follows the story of people investigating the disappearance and possible murders of Native American women in Montana. Directors Razelle Benally and Matthew Galkin take a look at the last decade of young indigenous women and girls who have gone missing or murdered and how arrests and convictions rarely happen in these cases.

Every piece of the puzzle in Murder in the Big Horn has a meaningful impact

From the moment you turn on the first episode, you can’t even begin to comprehend what in the world is happening in this city and the lack of help these people are getting to figure it out. Time and time again, a young girl or woman would go missing, and an excuse was made for their passing. It’s traumatic, heartbreaking, and thoroughly concerning to watch this unfold.

Within every story in this three-episode docuseries, you hear men and women talk about someone they lost and the continued unanswered questions they would receive. Let’s put ourselves in their shoes for five minutes. Imagine for a second that your wife, girlfriend, or daughter is kidnapped, maybe sold for trafficking, or found dead, and they provide ZERO help to you. I would be absolutely LIVID. How, in this day an age of technology, they aren’t able to find ways to help these people is another thing that blew my mind.

Overall, I give all the credit in the world to directors Razelle Benally and Matthew Galkin for brilliantly laying out and structuring the series that never once overstayed its welcome. Every piece of the puzzle had a meaningful impact on the story. It’s one of the most harrowing and haunting docuseries you will watch this year, and you don’t want to miss it!

Murder in the Big Horn debuts on Showtime on Feb. 5, 2023, with all three episodes available to stream on Feb. 3, 2023.
