The fallout over Douglas’ decision to choose his aunt Steffy as his guardian over his parents, Thomas and Hope, continued to play out today on The Bold and the Beautiful. Surprisingly, Steffy and Finn were not on the same page in terms of how to handle this situation.

While she’s leaning more and more toward honoring her nephew’s request, Finn is wary about bring more drama to their doorstep. They’ve been contending with crisis after crisis and have managed to find happiness again despite being blackmailed by Bill and Sheila’s freedom wearing on their sense of safety.

Meanwhile, at the cabin, Hope was wrestling with her son’s choice and how that will affect her, Liam, and Beth’s home life. She’s vehemently against Douglas going to live with Steffy, but at least as far as temporary situations go, Liam thinks it could be a good idea for the time being.

Here’s the full recap of events.

What happened today on The Bold and the Beautiful?

As last episode showed, Finn was shocked to learn Douglas wants to be raised by Steffy. But, as that reality began to sink in, the shock wore off and in its place came a negative reaction to the news. Finn loves Douglas but, as he said more than once, he and Steffy aren’t his parents.

He does enjoy having his nephew come to visit and it’s been wonderful watching Douglas, Kelly, and Hayes play with one another. However, Douglas has a stable, loving home with Hope and Liam who he stated make up for Thomas’ shortcomings as a parent.

Steffy told him she understood where he was coming from especially in the face of the kind of drama that could come there way if they were to step in as Douglas’ guardians. But she also believes that she needs to trust her gut on this and that there’s a reason her nephew decided he didn’t want to live with, or be raised, by his parents.

So, while it’s true that she and Finn have being dealing with a lot, she’s not willing to back off the possibility that she could assume custody of Douglas. Taking stock in her husband’s words, she agreed to table the discussion about their nephew living with them and instead pivoted to temporarily allowing him to stay with them.

Finn wasn’t too enthusiastic about that idea either and didn’t agree to it…yet, but this may be a decision that Steffy takes out of his hands especially if she learns she has an ally in Liam.

Hope and Liam differ on what’s best for Douglas

While Steffy was trying to persuade Finn to her side of things, Liam was attempting to get a handle on what Hope wants to do. She’s still reeling from not being chosen by her son to raise him. Once again, Liam tried to assure her that Douglas simply didn’t want to hurt either of his parents so he chose the aunt he loves instead.

In Liam’s opinion, Douglas’ choice wasn’t a reflection of Hope’s parenting or an indication that he doesn’t see the cabin as his home. He thinks they should let Douglas go live with Steffy temporarily so that he can get this desire to live at the Cliff House “out of his system.” It’s true that kids tend to get home sick after a couple of weeks even when they’re having a lot of fun, but Hope rightfully pointed out that that may not be the case for Douglas.

She desperately wants to know why her son would rather be with his aunt over her or his dad but it’s not a question she believes is appropriate to ask him so instead she stewed in turmoil over it with Liam bearing witness to her sadness.

The idea of Douglas not being with them breaks her heart and she repeatedly referred to herself and Liam as his parents. Her distress has begun to make Hope wonder if this is karmic retribution for being so sure Douglas would choose them. Liam put that thought to bed by reminding her that he’d told them he wanted to live at the cabin.

Again Hope asserted that Beth needs Douglas and that they had a hard time getting her to understand that he was temporarily living at Forrester Mansion. This time it might not be temporary and that scares her. To be honest, perhaps this storyline will show Hope how difficult it is being the non-custodial parent of a child you love deeply and what it’s like raising a child who doesn’t live with their sibling who they adore.

Both Liam and Thomas know what it’s like to parent while not being with your child daily and Steffy had to help Kelly adjust when Beth was abruptly placed back with her biological parents once her identity was revealed. It’s not an easy situation, no one is denying that but it is one they all can survive and navigate as they’ve done before.

I will say though Liam’s under the impression that Steffy doesn’t want to raise Douglas and only wants to ensure his feelings are respected and he feels heard. But, judging from her face while embracing Finn, she could be warming to the idea and possibly even setting her heart on it which would definitely be a problem down the line.
