For over forty years, beginning with the release of Raiders of the Lost Ark in 1981, Indiana Jones has been one of Hollywood’s most iconic film series. But, after Indiana’s revival in 2008 with Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, fans have been wondering how much more fight the daredevil archeologist has in him. But it looks like Indiana Jones 5 will be the final adventure.

Harrison Ford returns to the role of the legendary hero archaeologist for the franchise’s fifth installment, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. The film is produced by Kathleen Kennedy, Frank Marshall and Simon Emanuel, with Steven Spielberg and George Lucas serving as executive producers. John Williams, who has scored each Indy adventure since the original Raiders of the Lost Ark, is once again composing the score. So, get ready for familiar goosebumps.

Despite the large time gap between the first three Indiana Jones movies and the latest two sequels, Indiana Jones 5 has been in the works since 1970, only a year later than the time period in which the final film takes place.

Plans for a fifth Indiana Jones film harken back when Lucas and Spielberg negotiated with Paramount for four sequels to Raiders of the Lost Ark. Lucas began researching potential plot devices for a fifth film in 2008. The film was stalled for years, until 2012, when the project was passed to producer Kathleen Kennedy after she became the president of Lucasfilm.

So, here’s what we know about Indiana Jones 5!

Indiana Jones 5 synopsis

Though Disney has yet to release an official synopsis of the film, both trailers from Lucasfilm divulge that this will be Indiana Jones’ final adventure and that it will be a bit of a trip down memory lane.

While the film takes place mostly in 1969, we will get to revisit a younger Indiana Jones, dive into his past encounters with a Nazi from World War II and watch him jump out of airplanes, chase down motorcycles on horseback, survive massive explosions, leap from moving vehicles, dash across speeding trains, and all the usual Indiana Jones antics.

In the trailer, Indiana Jones also talks about his disbelief in magic, but also having seen things that he can’t quite explain. It’s safe to assume the film will explore realms of the fantastical, along with the usual caves explorations, mummified body encounters and deep sea dives that are shown in the trailer.

We also get to see Jones team up with another heroine. But, instead of a love interest, it’s his goddaughter.

And that’s it. That’s all we know so far about Indiana Jones 5, until Disney releases more info.
