Where can you stream The Whale online?

Welcome to “The Brenaissance.” If you’re not familiar with the phrase, it describes the reemergence of Brendan Fraser as a Hollywood star. Fraser is now the talk of Hollywood once again, thanks to his heartbreaking performance in The Whale. Will fans have to head to a theater to watch the film, or can they stream The Whale at home?

Fraser stars as Charlie, a 600-pound recluse who suffers from obesity. Charlie works as an online English teacher but never turns his camera to keep his appearance hidden. After a major health complication, Charlie’s life is coming to an end. With time running out, Charlie reaches out to his estranged daughter, Ellie (Sadie Sink), to make up for lost time.

Directed by Darren Aronofsky, The Whale is a gut-wrenching depiction of grief and regret as we try to find empathy in flawed characters. The script was written by Samuel D. Hunter, who penned the 2012 play the film is based on. Hong Chau, Sadie Sink, Ty Simpkins, and Samantha Morton round out the ensemble.

Where can you stream The Whale online?

Currently, The Whale is not available to stream online for free via any streaming service; however, you can buy or rent it online at Apple TV, Vudu, or Amazon Prime Video.

When will The Whale head to streaming?

Since The Whale stems from A24, it’s unknown when the film will end up on streaming. However, it will most likely stream on Showtime at some point in 2023. When will that be?

A24 typically holds their movies off streaming for over six months. Everything Everywhere All at Once, an A24 film released in March 2022 and premiered on Showtime in Nov. 2022. If the same pattern holds, The Whale won’t head to Showtime until the summer of 2023.
