The Little Mermaid release date, cast, synopsis, trailer and more

The live-action The Little Mermaid swims onto a big screen near you in the summer of 2023. The movie, which stars talented songstress and actor Halle Bailey as Ariel, brings the classic tale to a new generation. The beloved character has been a Disney fan favorite since the animated original debuted in 1989.

The House of Mouse has been on a roll adapting its classic animated films into live-action turns that breathe new life into these household staples. Fans remain divided from movie to movie on whether or not these new iterations add to their long-held love for these stories, but nonetheless they draw quite the audience. There’s no doubt this new The Little Mermaid will pull viewers in.

Rob Marshall (Mary Poppins Returns) was tapped to direct the film with David Magee attached (Finding Neverland) as the movie’s writer. Marshall and Magee adapted the live-action story with John DeLuca (Tony Bennett: An American Classic). Alan Menken returns to score the movie adding his touch to the live-action like he did the animated classic. He’s credited for music while Howard Ashman is credited for lyrics along with Lin-Manuel Miranda who’s provided additional songs to the film.

The Little Mermaid release date

The Little Mermaid premieres nationwide in theaters on Friday, May 26, 2023. At this time, it’s not known when the film will make its streaming debut likely on Disney+. We’ll keep you posted on its streaming release date.
