School Spirits theme song: What song plays in the opening credits?
By Sabrina Reed
School Spirits, the new paranormal murder mystery on Paramount+, has a distinct look and sound. The show’s lead, Maddie Nears, is a Gen Z teen with a style reminiscent of the ’90s grunge era which is complimented by the moody soundtrack that’s peppered throughout the series.
This is not the type of teen drama that has a tracklist that sparks with earworms and has a poppy, rocking and rollicking sort of vibe to it. The songs included in each episode aren’t many, there’s a handful chosen to accentuate a scene or add intensity.
But it’s not just School Spirits‘ soundtrack that feels like you’d be listening to these songs tucked away in a dark classroom while you’re skipping class or waiting to have a clandestine meet-up with your love interest. The theme song also creeps and crawls, highlighting the genre this show is a part of even with its lighter moments.
Maddie was murdered and the show’s opening sequence, complete with its theme song ensures that reality is at the forefront of the viewer’s mind. Here’s whose song plays during the opening credits of the series.

“Long Gone” is by Anna Waronker, a singer-songwriter, composer, and producer. She’s also the frontwoman for the band That Dog.
You may be familiar with her work if you’ve tuned into Dawson’s Creek which featured five of her songs over its run. Waronker composed and scored the Josie and the Pussycats film from 2001 along with the Clueless television series. She and Craig Wedren also collaborated on the Yellowjackets soundtrack, the score, and the opening credits song, “No Return,” so she’s no stranger to making music for TV and film.
