Julius Avery’s The Pope’s Exorcist is an upcoming supernatural horror starring Russell Crowe. But in what ways, if any, is the movie connected to the wildly popular The Exorcist franchise?

Based on Father Gabriele Amorth memoirs An Exorcist Tells His Story and An Exorcist: More Stories, The Pope’s Exorcist follows Father Gabriele Amorth (Russell Crowe) investigating the possession of a young boy in an attempt to help. Instead, Amorth uncovers centuries-old secrets and conspiracies the Vatican has been aware of and kept hidden.

The movie also stars Daniel Zovatto, Alex Essoe, Franco Nero, Laurel Marsden, Peter DeSouza, and others. The Pope’s Exorcist is rated R for some nudity, sexual references, language, and violence. All of the ingredients that make a great horror feature are there, but one big questions audiences have is if this movie is at all connected to The Exorcist series.

Is The Pope’s Exorcist part of The Exorcist franchise?

No. The only thing the horror franchise and The Pope’s Exorcist have in common is the shared word in the title. Other than that, the upcoming movie is fully inspired by the stories of Father Gabriele Amorth.

However, The Exorcist franchise will be growing very soon with a new movie. Set to serve as a sequel to the 1973 favorite, The Exorcist will premiere in theaters on Oct. 13, 2023. This will be the first of three planned movies. All three movies will be directed by David Gordon Green. It’s a great time to be a horror fan with so much to look forward to.

At this time, there is no streaming release set for the movie. It will release exclusively in theaters. When the movie does leave theaters, it w/ill more than likely go to Netflix. Will you be seeing the movie in theaters opening weekend or wait until it arrives on streaming?
