The creators of Super Troopers are back with their latest comedy Quasi hitting Hulu on April 20. I had the chance to see an advanced screening of the film and sit down to talk to the cast about the film. Below I share my review and excerpts from my sit down with the cast.

Quasi follows a hunchback who yearns for love but finds himself in the middle of a deadly feud between the Pop and the king when each of them orders the hunchback to kill one other. It stars the Broken Lizard crew Jay Chandrasekhar, Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter, Erik Stolhanske, and Adrianne Palicki.

We’ve gotten to a day and age where comedies aren’t pumping out as much as they used to. The Broken Lizard crew started writing this movie over twenty years ago. So, along the way, comedies have changed quite a bit, and I asked Jay Chandrasekhar how some of the jokes have changed within the film to present Quasi as it is today.

Quasi is a fun comedy that will indeed have some divisiveness when watching

"Some of the jokes we wrote 10-15 years ago were off that time and didn’t work anymore. Like, they were so old, I couldn’t even remember the references. I’m like, what is this job you’re like? It’s based on that song. I’m like, what is that song? And you have to pull up the phone and play the song for me. I’m like, and you don’t like that. You’re stretching. We got to change this, so we want to make it feel as modern as possible. But generally, we don’t really change a lot based on how society has changed. We try to just do what we think is funny and present it in a way that won’t get us canceled."

We all know that the Broken Lizard crew each brings their own fun, unique approach to each character, but my two favorites in the film are Jay Chandrasekhar and Steve Lemme as the King and Quasi. Lemme is exceptional as Quasi, who is this film’s true heart and soul. He has to provide an emotional backbone in a movie with many jokes, you feel empathy and root for him in return, and it’s all cause of Lemme. Chandrasekhar is the perfect king and has impeccable comedic timing.

Outside of the Broken Lizard crew, we see Adrianne Palicki in the movie as we’ve never seen her before. She played the Queen and had brought her typical charming self, but she was hilarious. I asked her about the role and meeting the guys.

"I read the 1st 30 pages and I was like dying this and I got it. It was like Monty Python all over this thing and the fact that they were each company two different characters and so I was just massively flattered. I got on Zoom with Kevin and Steve and immediately we hit it off. Steve insulted my last name, literally first thing out of his mouth and I just gave it right back to him. So half was like, oh, this would be fun. We got this and immediately they just welcomed me."

Overall, Quasi is a fun comedy that will indeed have some divisiveness when watching. But if you are a fan of the Broken Lizard crew’s films, you will enjoy Quasi and all the fun performances that are within it. I had a blast with this one and wish everyone could see it on the big screen like I did.

Quasi hits Hulu on April 20, 2023.
