How did Maddie and all the ghosts die on School Spirits?

School Spirits has wowed its audience since the series premiered in March on Paramount+. The murder mystery, which follows Maddie Nears as she investigates her murder, introduced viewers to a group of teen ghosts and their adult advisor all trapped in Split River High as they work to move onto the next phase of the afterlife.
By the end of season 1 only one member of this group managed to cross over, but we did learn how they each died including Maddie. Her death had a surprising twist to it. If you need a refresher on how each member of the ghost squad met there end, here’s what we know!
Spoilers ahead of School Spirits season 1
How did Maddie die on School Spirits?
After a fight with her mom in the school’s maintenance room, she followed the sound of two people arguing which led her into the boiler room where the fallout shelter is. When she opened the door to see what was going on, she found Mr. Martin arguing with Janet. At the time she didn’t know they were ghosts.
Janet went running out of the room and straight into Maddie which seems to have pushed Maddie’s spirit out of her body. Now Janet is walking around in it while Maddie is trapped in Split River High. It’s unclear if this means that Maddie isn’t really dead but suspended between the realm of the living and the dead because her body has been possessed.
How did Charley die on School Spirits?
Charley has a peanut allergy. The lunch preparers cooked that day’s fries in peanut oil. He died from his allergic reaction which triggered asphyxia. Charley chose to eat fries that day because he’d left an angry letter in his boyfriend’s locker telling him he didn’t want to see him anymore and that he didn’t love him. He was wallowing and didn’t get the chance to take back what he’d written. It was his biggest regret, but Maddie and Simon helped him get closure by delivering a letter to the now grown Emilio so he could right that particular wrong.
How did Wally die on School Spirits?
He’d been playing in the Split River High homecoming game when he was tackled. The force of it killed him instantly. The school’s stadium was named after him in honor of the legacy he’d left behind as a talented and well liked football player.
How did Rhonda die on School Spirits?
She was killed by her guidance counselor. He’d encouraged her to go after her dreams and apply to college like she wanted to do. They had struck up a rapport and she trusted him. However, he had a negative reaction when Rhonda showed him her acceptance letter. He killed her right then and there in his office.
How did Dawn die on School Spirits?
Dawn was hiding in a supply closet. She was listening in on her supposed friends who were making fun of her. In order to keep them from seeing her, she reached up to unscrew the light bulb, but she stepped in a puddle on the floor. As soon as Dawn touched the bulb, she was electrocuted.
So far Dawn is the only ghost on the show who has crossed over. Mr. Martin said Janet had but the others figured out he was lying. Dawn was able to pass on because she’d found closure through Maddie’s apology as she lamented the fact that anyone would make Dawn feel bad about herself and she called her a good friend. That’s what Dawn needed to hear in order to heal from the trauma of her death.
How did Mr. Martin die on School Spirits?
He says that he died in a fire set by a student of his. He’d managed to get his class out, but he fell prey to the flames.
How did Janet die on School Spirits?
In a newspaper published around that time, Janet’s parents stated that they believed Mr. Martin was responsible for the fire that claimed his and her life. The blaze broke out in the chem lab which is now the fall out shelter at the high school.
