Final spoiler warning!

What is the meaning behind Hey Jude by The Beatles?

How dare you doubt the wise words of Coach Beard! Of course he is telling the truth, he is a man who holds all of the knowledge. In a very sweet moment between Beard and Henry, Beard shares the story behind “Hey Jude” to try and comfort Henry.

Throughout Ted and Michelle’s divorce, Henry has remained pretty silent. Even now that his mom is dating Dr. Jacob aka Jake, we haven’t seen Henry share or open up about how he feels. It’s truly sad, but we’re glad he has people like Beard around.

Sensing Henry’s discomfort, Beard tells Henry that “Hey Jude” is about a young boy whose parents are going through a divorce. It’s a song about having the power to stay positive during a sad situation.

The 1968 hit “Hey Jude” was written by Paul McCartney for Julian, John Lennon’s son with Cynthia Powell. Julian’s parents were going through a nasty divorce after his father’s affair came to light. McCartney wanted Julian to know he is not alone and to stay positive during this difficult time.

Julian Lennon also inspired the songs “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” and “Good Night.”
