Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 is now in theaters, continuing the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase Five. But what’s the next film in the series for Marvel fans and what else is coming in Phase Five? Find out here!

Phase Four of the MCU had a mixed reception from fans. The emphasis on Disney+ TV shows such as WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Loki seemed to take away from the movies. It wasn’t helped by the pandemic putting off the release dates for Black Widow, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and The Eternals. 

While Spider-Man: No Way Home was a smash hit, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Thor: Love & Thunder had divisive reactions. The MCU seemed to be in a “holding pattern” for Phase Five.

That kicked off with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which introduced the future threat of the time-traveling Kang (Jonathan Majors). However, aside from a mixed critical reception, Quantumania also disappointed at the box office. It’s not helped by Majors currently in the middle of a criminal investigation that puts his future as Kane in jeopardy.

Thus, Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 is a crucial film to show the MCU can still maintain its drive as Phase Five continues. So which is the next film in that series?

What’s the next Marvel movie after Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3?

The next movie entry in the MCU will be The Marvels. Originally scheduled for July 28, the film was switched to premiere on November 10, 2023.

The movie has Brie Larson reprising her role as Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel. She’ll be teaming up with Teyonah Harris as Monica Rambeau (once known as Captain Marvel in the comics), who now boasts powers of her own and Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) aka Ms. Marvel from the Disney+ series.

The Marvels appears to show the three women swapping places thanks to their powers, leading to a wild cosmic adventure. Samuel L. Jackson will reprise his role as Nick Fury.

The next Phase Five film will be Captain America: New World Order, set to premiere May 3, 2024.

The Phase Five Marvel TV Shows

While The Marvels is the next film, the next entry in the MCU Phase Five will be Secret Invasion. The Disney+ series has Nick Fury taking on a secret cabal of Skrulls on Earth. It co-stars Ben Mendelsohn, Olivia Colman and Emilia Clarke. The six-episode series premieres on Disney+ on June 23.

The series will be followed by season 2 of Loki. There’s no release date yet on that show, but it seems likely to hit before The Marvels does. So while GOTG Vol 3 is entertaining fans now, it will be a wait of several months before the next MCU film continues the saga.
