FBI has had a lot of characters who took off with fans. But what happened to former Assistant Director Rina Trenholm and what made her absence such a big deal for fans?

Caution: This article contains SPOILERS for FBI season 4, go watch the latest episode before reading ahead.

Who was Rina Trenholm on FBI?

Introduced in season 3 episode 2, Rina Trenholm (Kathleen Munroe) was a top college student in psychology and criminology. She started as a Special Agent for the Newark, New Jersey field office and worked her way up to becoming ASAC managing the office.

Transferring the Manhattan office, Rina soon rose to become Assistant Director in Charge, working alongside Isobel Castille (Alana de la Garza). The pair could work together well, although there were times Rina seemed more interested in her political career in the FBI than doing the right thing but willing to help others.

Rina also began a relationship with Jubal Valentine (Jeremy Sisto), that seemed to do well. Isobel was concerned that it might affect their work and Jubal getting too close to Rina. That turned out to lead to tragedy.

What happened to Rina on FBI?

In season 4’s “Unfinished Business,” Rina and Jubal were leaving home when Rina was shot by a sniper. She was being targeted by Antonio Vargas (David Zayas), an imprisoned drug lord the team had tangled with before. He blamed them for his family being killed by rivals and was striking at their loved ones for revenge.

The following episode had Jubal relating Rina was still in a coma. In the aptly titled “Grief,” Jubal came to the hospital for a visit only to learn Rina’s family had shut off her life support when the doctors told them there was no hope for recovery. Jubal was naturally rocked by that for a while.

Rina’s unexpected death was a huge shock to FBI fans and showed that no one can truly be safe on this show, as her fate was one of the biggest twists for the series.

FBI airs Tuesdays at 8/7c on CBS and streaming on Paramount+.
