Updated: Nov. 28, 2023 – CBS announced that NCIS: Hawaii season 3 will premiere on Monday, Feb. 12, 2023 at 10 p.m. ET after the season 21 debut of NCIS. This, of course, was great news but fans were also clamoring to know when filming would get underway. Now we have an answer!

TVLine reports that filming will commence on Monday, Dec. 4. As is traditional, production will start with a Hawaiian blessing ceremony. The outlet also cited that Vanessa Lachey, Alex Tarrant, Noah Mills, Jason Antoon, Yasmine Al-Bustami, Tori Anderson, and LL Cool J are expected to be in attendance.

LL Cool J, who will be reprising his NCIS: Los Angeles role of Sam Hanna, is an addition to the cast for NCIS: Hawaii‘s third season. He’ll be a recurring star, however, there’s no word yet on how many episodes he’ll appear in. It’s possible that Henry Cusick might return as John Swift. Cusick is famous for roles like Lost, so having him for only a guest appearance seems off. Swift sticking around as a thorn in the team’s side could be a fun touch.

Both characters played significant roles in the season 2 finale.

“Dies Irae” – When a figure from Tennant’s CIA past reemerges, the NCIS team seeks help from the most unlikely place in order to catch a killer who threatens to destroy everything Tennant has built, on the conclusion to the two-part second season finale of the CBS Original series NCIS: HAWAI’I, Monday, May 22 (10:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network, and available to stream live and on demand on Paramount+*. In the episode, “Dies Irae,” Jane Tennant was in Venezuela tracking Creel, the man she believed had been dead for years but was now coming after her and former mentor Maggie. Creel had already killed Charlie-1, with Kate coming to aid Jane.

The pair came under fire only to be saved by none other than Sama Hanna, paying back Tennant for some help. To try and capture Creel, Jane was forced to let Maggie out of prison for a sting operation. It turned out to be a daring move by Jane to trap Creel. However, Maggie ended up shooting him dead before escaping.

The team celebrated together while internal affairs agent Swift was on the phone telling someone that the team was good but also needed more oversight. He decided the team needed a new addition, and “I have someone in mind.”

Presumably, that addition will be Sam Hanna. There’s yet to be an announcement on more additions to the cast. There also haven’t been reports of cast members making an exit. Here’s who’s expected to be in NCIS: Hawaii season 3:

  • Vanessa Lachey as Jane Tennant
  • Alex Tarrant as Kai Holman
  • Noah Mills as Jesse Boone
  • Jason Antoon as Ernie Malik
  • Yasmine Al-Bustami as Lucy Tara
  • Tori Anderson as Kathrine Marie “Kate” Whistler
  • LL Cool J as Sam Hanna
  • Kian Talan as Alex Tennant

An official episode count for the third season hasn’t be revealed. However, it’s expected to have between 10-13 episodes as will the majority of CBS’ midseason line-up in order for the shows to finale in May as usual.
