Black Mirror is finally coming back. And to little surprise, the sci-fi-horror anthology series is biting the hand that feeds it with a sharp satire of Netflix. Here’s what you need to know about Black Mirror season 6.

It’s been a long wait for new episodes of the acclaimed series. Season 5 dropped in 2019, and, like many shows, the pandemic threw production into a long delay. Also, because of the depth of the storylines, creator Charlie Booker wanted to wait until he got more in the can before releasing Season 6. However, a trailer has finally dropped to show what fans can expect in the new year, and it’s once more a great mix of tales.

In a statement, Booker shared how a reason for the delay was he wanted to upend the fan expectations on what will be coming on the show.

"“I’ve always felt that Black Mirror should feature stories that are entirely distinct from one another and keep surprising people (and myself), or else what’s the point? It should be a series that can’t be easily defined and can keep reinventing itself. So partly as a challenge and partly to keep things fresh for both me and the viewer, I began this season by deliberately upending some of my own core assumptions about what to expect.Consequently, this time, alongside some of the more familiar Black Mirror tropes, we’ve also got a few new elements, including some I’ve previously sworn blind the show would never do, to stretch the parameters of what a Black Mirror episode’ even is. The stories are all still tonally Black Mirror through-and-through — but with some crazy swings and more variety than ever before.”"

It looks like Booker is living up to his words as the trailer shows the wild tales to come.

What is coming on Black Mirror season 6?

The trailer showcases a satire of streaming TV with “Joan Is Awful,” in which the title character (Schitt’s Creek Emmy winner Annie Murphy) discovers that her life has now been made into a streaming series starring Salma Hayek as herself.

Also on the plans:

  • “Loch Henry” has a pair of documentary filmmakers tracking a kidnapper in a sleepy Scottish town only to discover a darker secret there.
  • “Beyond the Sea” stars Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad) and Josh Hartnett as astronauts in the 1960s who discover a dangerous alien lifeform.
  • “Mazey Day” has Zazie Beetz as a paparazzi photographer hounding a troubled starlet (Clara Rugaard) who’s fleeing a deadly hit and run but may have a darker secret in her past.
  • “Demon 79” looks themed to 1970s horror movies as a meek sales assistant is ordered to commit terrible acts by a seemingly demonic force.
