Lifetime is taking a break from thrillers and ripped from the headlines titles tonight thanks to the debut of Mary J. Blige’s Real Love, a film executive produced by the R&B/Hip-Hop Soul icon and directed by Camrus Johnson (Batwoman).

The movie is a coming-of-age love story that follows Kendra, an 18 year old whose stepping out on her own for the first time as she experiences college life at a North Carolina HBCU. Kendra has a gift for photography and has big dreams she intends on achieving, so she’s determined to keep her mind on school, keeping up with her work study job, and not getting distracted by the promise of love and romance. Her relationship with Ben complicates this.

There is a definite spark between Kendra and her photography class partner, but with disapproving parents, financial hardship and an unplanned pregnancy brewing in this story, love no matter how real it is, can’t negate the difficulties of life. In spite of this, she and Ben do find themselves falling for one another with a depth that neither of them were prepared for.

However, Kendra has her whole life ahead of her. One full of dreams she wants to pursue with a strength and passion that she doesn’t want to dim for the chance to be with Ben. As such, she’ll have to choose and that means leaving Ben behind even if there romance doesn’t feel like it’s anywhere close to being truly over.
