The Chosen is currently working on Season 4. But will this show contain the most eventful moment in the life of Jesus Christ? Find out more.

There have been many projects about the life of Christ, from movies to TV specials. But never has a series done a multi-season look at the life of the man, not just the religious overtones but his impact on the world. That’s changed with The Chosen, which has already aired three seasons.

The project is unique in that it was crowdfunded, raising over $11 million from investors. It can be seen on numerous streamers such as Peacock, Netflix, Prime Video, Tubi, and its own app via The Roku Channel. It will also begin airing on The CW this fall.

Jonathan Rumie plays Jesus, with the series focusing on his sermons, his lessons, helping Mary Magdalene (Elizabeth Tabish), and working with his Disciples. Season 3 culminated in his delivering the Sermon on the Mount and preparing to send his Apostles out to spread his teachings.

The show has become a huge international hit, with production underway for Season 4. But that leaves the question if it is going to tackle the most famous and controversial aspect of Jesus and his legacy.

Will The Chosen show the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ?

Among Christians, the Crucifixion and Resurrection are key tenets of the faith, the backbone of the Easter season. The story of how Jesus was crucified, died and then returned is a powerful part of the Bible. It’s also an incredibly brutal sequence to film, as proven by films like The Last Temptation of Christ and The Passion of the Christ.

The plan is for the show to have seven seasons, so season 4 may not feature the Crucifixion just yet. It’s more likely to play on flashbacks to Mary and other Disciples and the growing worry the Roman rulers have over Jesus and his growing followers. It’s thus probable the Crucifixion will be at least another season away.

How much of it can be shown is also a question. While the series can be frank on the subject matter, showing the full-on agony Jesus endured on the cross may be too harrowing for TV viewers to take. There’s also the tricky subject of the Resurrection itself and its impact.

Obviously, these events will have to be shown, as it’s impossible to do a project about Jesus’ life and not cover them. It’s likely that the series may shy away from visibly showing the more gruesome parts of it but still get the impact across.

That does add to more tension as viewers of The Chosen know this event is coming, and how it will be presented is a major challenge the showrunners have to address carefully.

The Chosen is streaming on Peacock, Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, Tubi, and The Roku Channel.
