The Walking Dead is getting a big buzz with its new spin-off Dead City. But fans are also excited about the planned spin-off focusing on Rick and Michonne. What are some updates for this upcoming show?

Announced at the 2022 San Diego Comic-Con, this new spin-off (tentatively titled The Walking Dead: Summit) will bring back Andrew Lincoln as Rick Grimes and Danai Gurira as Michonne. Rick was the key hero when The Walking Dead premiered. He was a sheriff awakening from a coma to discover zombies overran the world. Rick worked to save a group of humans amid the chaos and was a great leader.

Lincoln surprisingly left the show in season 9 with Rick seemingly killed but saved by a mysterious group. That left Michonne heartbroken as the brutal warrior had fallen for him. The series finale did have Rick returning and trying to make a new life for himself. Meanwhile, Michonne decided to seek him out.

Thus the new show has Rick and Michonne trying to reach each other and doubtless running into both Walkers and some sinister human forces along the way.

Scott M. Gimple serves as the showrunner for the series, with Gurira, Lincoln, Denise Huth, and Brian Bockrath executive producing. Gurira is also credited as a writer and co-creator, billing the show as a “prestige miniseries.”

When does the Rick and Michonne Walking Dead spin-off premiere?

The show wrapped up principal filming in February. The producers shared a statement thanking fans for their great support.

"“Thank you for creating the next world of The Walking Dead with us. Your talent, energy, and enthusiasm through it all has been the thing that’s gotten us through it all, bringing home a story more than a decade in the telling! This story will live on, and we work with it; we’re the ones who live!”"

The post-production work will no doubt take a few more months before AMC announces a premiere date sometime in 2024. It could be as early as winter, or they may wish to hold it back for a bit.

At least fans know the show is wrapped and soon will be ready to go and continue Rick and Michonne’s bold romance in this world of the dead.

The Walking Dead: Summit is set to air on AMC in 2024.
