Stranger Things truly is a pop culture phenomenon! Since its debut on Netflix in 2016, the series has certainly taken the world by storm. And with four seasons in the can and the already confirmed fifth and final one in the works, the excitement for the show has not lessened at all! So when does season 5 start filming?

The fifth season is highly-anticipated just like its predecessors, but especially because it will be the bittersweet goodbye. When we pick up with new episodes again, we’re going to need answers to some of the cliffhangers left at the end of season 4. While we thought Vecna could have died, it seems like he’s still around. Max is in a coma. And Vecna’s gates open and tear through Hawkins meaning the Upside Down can now get into the real world on a much bigger scale.

We can’t wait to see the story continue and find out how it’s all going to end! That of course begins with the cameras rolling and getting filming done. Has the sci-fi series started filming season 5 yet? We’ve got the answer for you below!

Has Stranger Things season 5 started filming?

As of Aug. 11, 2023, it looks like Stranger Things season 5 has not started filming yet. According to PopBuzz, Noah Schanpp who plays Will said in a livestream that filming was supposed to start in May 2023. Jim Hopper actor David Harbour later shared filming would begin in June 2023 at a convention.

However on May 6, 2023, the Duffer Brothers (aka the creators of the show), shared in a tweet that filming would be delayed until the writers strike would be resolved. And as of this writing, the Writers Guild of America is still on strike. The Duffer’s noted that “writing does not stop when filming begins.” The strike has forced many productions to come to a halt as well.

Before the strike and after season 4 was released, the creators previously said that the wait between seasons 4 and 5 wouldn’t be as long as the one that was between season 3 and 4 (almost three years!). However now that there’s a delay and it’s unknown when the WGA might come to an agreement with networks and studios, the planned season 5 filming wrap date and premiere date will probably be pushed.
