It looks like we’re inching closer and closer to another horror movie sequel, readers. The Purge 6 is in the works! The dystopian movie and TV show franchise began back in 2013 with the original film, depicting what would happen if all crime — including murder — was legal for 12 hours. Scary, we know. While the installments to come have varied in quality, the premise of the franchise keeps viewers coming back. As the political scope in the United States continues to get more and more alarming, these movies start to feel all too real.

The first Purge movie stars Ethan Hawke, Lena Headey, Adelaide Kane, and Max Burkholder as the Sadin family who fight to stay alive in their own home. Though it wasn’t exactly a critical hit, the movie did make a lot of money at the box office, thus spawning multiple sequels, a prequel, and a show on USA Network.

If you’re a fan of The Purge universe, let’s get into everything we know so far about The Purge 6.

The Purge 6 script is done

Despite the belief that The Forever Purge would mark the end of the movie series, creator James DeMonaco is taking that back, telling Variety in an interview in June that he finished the script for the sixth installment months ago, also shedding some light on what we can expect:

"“It’s not completely different than previous movies, but it’s a new America that we’re entering into. In The Forever Purge, America kind of collapsed, and it’s really kind of mapped itself according to different ideologies. The states are based on sexuality, religion and ideology. So we’ve broken apart and the state of discord is at its worst. We enter The Purge in that world.”"

It seems the current state of America has inspired him to continue with the series.

Frank Grillo will return for The Purge 6

Though we don’t have the official cast for The Purge 6, DeMonaco says actor Frank Grillo will return to reprise his role as former police sergeant Leo Barnes, who stars in the second and third movies. Fans are certainly excited to see him back on their screens as we watch him fight for his life once more.

What is The Purge 6 about?

And now that the script is done, DeMonaco has had no trouble teasing what viewers can expect in The Purge 6. In a new interview with Collider, the writer/director broke down what inspired him to write a new movie, revealing we’ll be seeing a “nightmarish version” of the United States:

"“Purge 6 is my way of looking at the country now. I grew up watching Logan’s Run and Soylent Green and John Carpenter and George Romero, whose sociopolitical messaging was within the films. They were smuggling ideas into the film. So for me for 6, I was extrapolating on the discord and taking it to its furthest, as far as you can take that idea of what’s going on, I feel, in the country and the political landscape. And it’s a broken America. We’re remapping. [The Purge 6] is about the remapping of America based on ideology, sexuality and religion, so that the states are broken down. You have your Black state, you have your gay state, you have your white evangelical state. And it’s really a broken country.”"

Additionally, DeMonaco called out Republican politician Marjorie Tyler Greene for her views, explaining that because he grew up in New York, he believes in the “melting pot,” adding: “…That’s how I’d like to see our country represented, by many faces and different religions and sexualities.”

Universal is “scared” of The Purge 6 budget

And while DeMonaco is ready to put out another Purge movie, it looks like the studio might be hesitant. While speaking with The Playlist in July, Universal apparently has reservations regarding the budget he’s requesting for the sixth movie. For now, The Purge 6 is in “limbo.” Here’s what he shared:

"“I wrote the script. Universal has seen it. There are concerns about budget, but it definitely presents a fractured America. The America I present in Purge 6 is where we are all separated by ideology and sexual preference. So, the states are broken down in different ways. It’s written, it’s in [Universal’s] hands. I think they’re scared about the budget. But my thing was if I was going to come back and direct a sixth one, it was going to be something bigger and a little more epic in scope, with this new America I want to present and bringing back [Frank Grillo’s] character. So, it’s kinda in limbo.”"

Does The Purge 6 have a release date?

All of this being said, The Purge 6 does not have a release date. Universal has yet to officially green-light the movie and filming has not begun. Because DeMonaco wrote the script already, the good news is the movie wouldn’t necessarily be delayed due to the WGA strike, but the studio has to okay the project before anything else can happen.

If The Purge 6 is announced by Universal this year and they can begin filming soon after, it’s possible the movie could come out in 2024. But if it continues to be in this limo stage, we could be looking at 2025… if ever.
