Updated: Sept. 5, 2023 – Magnum P.I. season 5 finished the first half of its run back in May. The series didn’t return with the second half in the summer and won’t premiere for some time, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have information to share with fans about Part 2.

The highly anticipated rest of the season will come off the heels of a life changing midseason finale that closed the door to one major arc and opened the door to character focused episodes that’ll tug on the heart strings.

Here’s everything we know!

Is Magnum P.I. season 5 part 2 filming?

No. Filming actually wrapped on the fifth season in April 2023, so the episodes have been banked and are waiting for release.

Magnum P.I. season 5 part 2 release date

We have good news for fans of the series. While it was previously announced that the second half of season 5 would be held for the midseason, NBC has reversed that decision. Due to the ongoing writers and actors strike, the show has been moved to NBC’s fall schedule. Season 5 part 2 will premiere on Monday, Oct. 4 at 10 p.m. ET after Quantum Leap season 2’s debut.

Magnum P.I. season 5 part 1 ending explained

According to TVLine, the midseason finale–“Charlie Foxtrot”–brought a close to the Ahmed Hadid arc where a mysterious person was seeking revenge for the death of the terrorist. It turns out the perpetrator was CIA Agent Nadine Amherst, who’d been thought to be dead. She had been Ahmed’s handler years ago and had fallen in love with him. She launched her plan after the death of her and Ahmed’s son.

Amherst was convinced that her former CI was wrongfully killed, and she blamed Rick, as the triggerman, for the assassination. She kidnapped him because of this and pressed him for information on the operation that cost Ahmed his life. Rick insisted that when they stormed their target’s hideaway, Ahmed had been holding an innocent woman at gunpoint. Amherst didn’t believe him and was about to use extreme force to get more out of Rick, but Magnum and his team interceded before she could.

Rick was able to reunite with Suzy, but curiously deleted the video he’d made for her and their daughter, Joy, when he thought he may lose his life. In it, he’d said, “I love you,” and expressed how he felt about her and their family.

Unfortunately, for T.C., the news he go in the hospital wasn’t good. At the top of the episode, he’d been rushed to receive medical care after being shot. While he was stabilized, he realized that he didn’t have any feeling in his legs and had been told he only had a chance at being able to walk once more.

What is Magnum P.I. season 5 part 2 about?

An official synopsis has yet to be released, but showrunner Eric Guggenheim did sit down with TV Guide to discuss the second half of season 5.

In the interview, Guggenheim shared that Suzy and Rick’s relationship will be a big part of part 2 because they’re co-parenting and Rick feels strongly about his daughter’s mother, as evidenced by the video confession he made in the midseason finale.

Magnum and Higgins will also be navigating their own relationship. The honeymoon phase of their romance is over now, however, the showrunner did say, “…in the second half of the season, things will still be fun and romantic, but there’s also going to be a few bumps in the road.” This was alluded to in episode 9 when the couple began to experience conflict over how Magnum was handling his friends being hunted.

Guggenheim also shared the following:

"We’re gonna see our recurring characters, namely [played by] Bobby Lee, Chris Thornton, Martin Martinez — they’re gonna be in more episodes. So is Emily Alabi [who plays Mahina], and Judith Scott will be back as T.C.’s mom. Instead of doing one big arc like we just did with the guys, we’re gonna be telling multiple stories over multiple episodes that are a little bit more character-driven. T.C. and Rick, for example, each have their own stories.Midway through Part 2, we’re actually going to introduce a new antagonist played by the incredible Patrick Fabian from Better Call Saul. I think that is the first time I’ve shared that! He’s absolutely terrific. We are doing a story revolving around Japanese internment in Episode 13. Sab Shimono is probably best known from — and this will tell you how old I am — [the films] Gung Ho and Presumed Innocent. He was actually interned at a camp in California as a child, and he’ll be playing a man who was in a camp, so having him on the show is a real honor. I will say there’s a lot more action in the second half. The set pieces are bigger and more frequent."

How many episodes does Magnum P.I. season 5 part 2 have?

The second half of the season has a total of 10 episodes. So, as a whole, season 5 will have a 20 episode run.

Is Magnum P.I. season 6 happening?

Unfortunately, no. NBC made the decision to cancel the series on June 23, 2023. This may come as a surprise to fans who remember the show was initially reported as being picked up for a fifth and sixth season by the network. However, ahead of the season 5 premiere, this changed.

Instead of two seasons comprised of 10 episodes, it would be one season with a total of 20 episodes that would be split evenly into two parts. The network would then make a decision on a potential sixth season. Disappointingly, they’ve chosen not to move forward with another installment.

Does Magnum P.I. season 5 part 2 end on a cliffhanger?

Thankfully, no. Guggenheim addressed this in his TV Guide interview:

"We did not shoot an alternate ending. The season does have a very clear ending; we feel that Part 2 ends in a very satisfying way. There’s some closure there for a lot of the characters, but there’s also things left unresolved that can be picked up in season 6."

As season 6 isn’t happening, at least fans will get a satisfying ending for the series. Stay tuned to Hidden Remote for more NBC news and coverage.
