Updated: July 12, 2023 – The Flash, Blue Beetle, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, and the Joker sequel are the last DC films set to hit theaters before the DCEU pivots to becoming a connected universe. Co-CEOs and chairmen James Gunn and Peter Safran have spoke about Elseworlds that’ll exist within the franchise like Matt Reeves’ The Batman universe, however, the Gunn-penned and directed summer blockbuster Superman: Legacy will be ushering in a new era.

The film is still in the early stages of development, but there’s been so much buzz about this new jaunt into Clark Kent’s life that fans are clamoring to know more. Here’s what’s been announced about the movie so far.

Superman: Legacy release date

The film will release in theaters on Friday, June 11, 2025. While there is an ongoing writers strike, this isn’t likely to impact the movie’s release window since the movies scheduled before it have finished production and Gunn had completed his script before the strike began.

Is Superman: Legacy filming?

No. The casting process hasn’t concluded. Filming, however, could be delayed if the actors go on strike. SAG-AFTRA is in the middle of negotiating a new contract with the AMPTP. An agreement must be met before the July 12 deadline at 11:59 p.m. PT. If it isn’t, it’ll automatically trigger a strike and actors a part of the union will have to cease working on current projects and they won’t be able to promote what’s already been banked. This could affect DC’s movie calendar.

Will Superman: Legacy stream on Max after theaters?

Yes. An exact streaming release date is unknown. Given the popularity of superhero movies, the film is expected to exceed the typical 30-45 day theatrical release window. As such, it could be held from Max until fall 2025.

Superman: Legacy age rating

The film will have a PG-13 rating. Thematic elements haven’t been disclosed but, based on its genre, fantasy violence will be featured. The degree of it may vary. The same can be said for any language and mature content shown.

Who will play Superman in Superman: Legacy?

David Corenswet has been cast in the role of Clark Kent/Superman. The 6’4″ 29 year old (who will be turning 30 on July 8) is a Julliard grad who is best known for his work in the Ryan Murphy Netflix series The Politician and Hollywood, the Netflix film Look Both Ways where he starred opposite Lili Reinhart, HBO’s corrupt cop drama We Own This City, and the A24 horror movie Pearl.

Superman: Legacy plot

An official synopsis has yet to be released for the film and the plot is tightly under wraps. But Collider reports Gunn and Safran have discussed Clark’s age. While he will be a younger hero, he’ll still be an adult working as a reporter at the Daily Planet, in a world where the population is aware of superpowers and have had exposure to heroes.

Clark will be settled in his role as Superman, having established himself as someone the people of Metropolis (and the globae) can count on. This is not an origin story, but it will likely focus heavily on Clark’s Kryptonian heritage and upbringing among humans, how he straddles both worlds, and his kindness in a jaded world.
