Ghosts Season 3 is not coming in 2023

"Pilot" -- GHOSTS is a single-camera comedy about Samantha and Jay, a cheerful freelance journalist and up-and-coming chef from the city, respectively, who throw both caution and money to the wind when they decide to convert a huge rundown country estate they inherited into a bed & breakfast--only to find it's inhabited by the many spirits of deceased residents who now call it home. The departed souls are a close-knit, eclectic group that includes a saucy Prohibition-era lounge singer (Danielle Pinnock); a pompous 1700's Militiaman (Brandon Scott Jones); a '60s hippie fond of hallucinogens (Sheila Carrasco); an overly upbeat '80s scout troop leader (Richie Moriarty); a cod-obsessed Viking explorer from 1009 (Devon Chandler Long); a slick '90s finance bro (Asher Grodman); a sarcastic and witty Native from the 1500s (Romn Zaragoza); and a society woman and wife of an 1800's robber baron who is Samantha's ancestor (Rebecca Wisocky), to name a few. If the spirits were anxious about the commotion a renovation and B&B will create in their home, it's nothing compared to when they realize Samantha is the first live person who can see and hear them. Debuts Thursday, Oct. 7 at 9:00 PM on the CBS Television Network and available to stream live and on demand on the CBS app and Paramount+. When CBS announced its updated fall 2023 schedule, it came with one confirmation. Ghosts Season 3 will not premiere in 2023.

The broadcast networks need to pivot in their plans. While ABC set up a strike-proof fall, CBS was one of the networks that planned for things to remain the same. However, this wasn’t your usual summer.

The writers went on strike in May 2023. As that strike continued, the actors joined them in July. With both writers and actors on strike, there is more solidarity. Production is completely halted, meaning the studios will soon need to really start negotiating. It also means that fall TV cannot happen the way it usually would.

CBS pivoted its plans, releasing a fall schedule that is made up of reruns, unscripted shows, and acquisitions. The schedule confirmed one thing for Ghosts fans: we won’t see Season 3 this year.

When will Ghosts Season 3 premiere on CBS?

The earliest we’re expecting to see the third season at this point is in January 2024. That doesn’t guarantee anything, though. It’s all going to depend on when the actors can get back to work.

One of the benefits of Ghosts‘s early renewal is that the writing work would have started early. Filming for this series needs to happen in the spring and summer due to the costumes of the characters. Some episodes will be ready, but CBS won’t want to premiere this series when no other scripted show can premiere. It will want to pair the series with Young Sheldon again.

So, we probably won’t see episodes until Young Sheldon is able to premiere.

The good news is we will have a similar show to keep us entertained. The UK version of the comedy will air on Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT in the fall. There will be two episodes back to back, running us through as many seasons as necessary. There are four seasons with a fifth and final season in development—the UK series isn’t affected by the WGA or SAG-AFTRA strikes.
