Pounce back into your Netflix account as the action-adventure animated family comedy film, The Monkey King is set to be released on the platform very soon!
The film is directed by Anthony Stacchi (The Boxtrolls). Peilin Chou (Over the Moon) produces alongside Stephen Chow, who serves as executive producer. According to a 2018 article from Variety, Pearl Studio first announced that the film was in development at the Annecy Intl. Animation Film Festival. The project was then attached to Netflix in 2021 and scheduled for release sometime in 2023. What is The Monkey King about?
The movie is based on the fictional Chinese monkey main character who acquires supernatural powers through Taoist practices in the 16th-century novel Journey to the West. In this animated adaptation, the Monkey King is using his supernatural ability to pump up his inflated ego. He embarks on a daring quest to defeat 100 demons in a bid to achieve true immortality and be one with the gods.

Jimmy O. Yang (Crazy Rich Asians) voices the titular character, Monkey King, aka Monkey, an outcast with superpowers and a big ego. Jolie Hoang-Rappaport (Watchmen) voices Lin, a peasant and Monkey’s assistant, Bowen Yang (Wicked) voices the Dragon King, Ruler of the Eastern Sea, Jo Koy (Easter Sunday) voices Benbo, Ron Yuan voices Babbo, Stephanie Hsu (Joy Ride) voices the Mayor’s wife, and B.D. Wong (Jurassic World Dominion) voices Buddha.
The Monkey King age rating
The Monkey King received a PG rating from the MPAA. This means that the movie is expected to include some elements that young children might not have already been exposed to. Since the plot fits into the action-adventure genre, there is a lot of violence that takes place throughout the duration of the film as well as strong use of magical powers, the use of weapons, and explosions.
When does The Monkey King come out?
The Monkey King will be released on the streaming service Netflix on Aug. 18.
