Elsbeth release updates, strike delay, cast, synopsis, trailer and more

Updated: July 19, 2023 CBS has announced its new schedule, and one of the two dramas coming to the network is Elsbeth. It will have Carrie Preston reprising her role from The Good Wife and The Good Fight as quirky attorney Elsbeth Tascioni, now embarking on a new career.

What is Elsbeth about?

The quirky character first appeared on The Good Wife. At first glance, she’s a scatterbrained, eccentric attorney who tends to ramble, focus on offbeat things and seemingly has no idea what’s going on.

But under that behavior is a legal genius of the highest order who can run rings around opposing attorneys and always emerge victorious. Preston won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series for the part and reprised it in The Good Fight spin-off.

The new series puts the title character front and center as she’s moved to New York and somehow becomes a consultant for the NYPD. Her unconventional thinking lets her see details others miss and she balances crime-solving with her legal work.

It’s a unique direction for the character who finally gets the spotlight.

"ELSBETH, starring Carrie Preston as Elsbeth Tascioni, an astute but unconventional attorney who utilizes her singular point of view to make unique observations and corner brilliant criminals alongside the NYPD. After leaving her successful legal career in Chicago to tackle a new investigative role in New York City, Elsbeth finds herself jockeying with the toast of the NYPD, Captain C.W. Wagner (Wendell Pierce). Working alongside Elsbeth is Officer Kaya Blanke (Carra Patterson), a stoic and ethical officer who quickly develops an appreciation for Elsbeth’s insightful and offbeat ways."

Besides Preston, the series also stars Wendell Pierce (The Wire) as Captain C.W. Wagner, who doesn’t appreciate Elsbeth showing up his detectives. Carra Patterson plays Office Kaya Blanke who helps Elsbeth. So far, there’s no word on who else will star in the series.

The series is produced by The Good Wife creators Robert and Michelle King with Liz Clotzer and Jonathan Tolins.

Elsbeth release updates

Previously, the series was scheduled to make its debut in the fall of 2023.  CBS planned for the show to air on Thursdays at 10/9c following So Help Me Todd. However, due to delays prompted by the writers and actors strikes, the new CBS original has been moved to the midseason.

How many episodes will Elsbeth have?

An official episode count hasn’t been announced. The series had been picked up for order without information shared on how many episodes viewers can expect from its freshman series. But, given it’s move to the midseason, it’ll likely have 10-15 episodes to accommodate production delays.

Where to stream Elsbeth

Like all of CBS’ originals, you’ll be able to stream the series on Paramount+. Premium subscribers will be able to watch the show live and on-demand, while those on the Essential plan will have the ability to watch new episodes the day after they air on CBS.
