The new trailer for Wonka has created buzz for this prequel to the beloved Charlie and the Chocolate Factory! But just where was this new musical actually filmed?

The saga of Willy Wonka began in Ronald Dahl’s 1964 novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. It told of the eccentric candy maker who could pull off impossible treats, a recluse in a fantastic factory manned by the quirky Oompa-Loompas.

In 1971, the book was adapted into Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory with Gene Wilder in the title role. While a flop in its time, the film has now become a beloved classic, mostly thanks to Wilder’s wonderfully quirky performance as the title character.

Tim Burton adapted it in 2005 as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory with Johnny Depp as in the lead. While mostly true to the book, it did add some backstory of the candy maker’s childhood affected by a rough dentist father.

Now, Wonka will have Timothee Chalamet as Willy, showing how he developed his candy skills, met the Oompa-Loompas, and established his factory we all know and love. The movie looks to have some quirky fun and music, but just where was it filmed?

The filming locations for the movie Wonka

The film was shot entirely in the UK, mostly in Lyme Regis, Bath, Verulamium Park, and Abbey Mill Lane in St Albans, Mapledurham, at the Rivoli Ballroom in London, Watford, and in Oxford (Hertford College and the Radcliffe Camera).

It appears the film used these locations mostly for the outdoor locales of Wonka trying to build his shop and clashing with the local “candy barons.” The Rivoli Ballroom looks to be the site of a huge musical number, and soundstages were utilized for some of the more fantastic scenes.

The UK locale should give the film some spirit as Wonka looks to give the beloved character a unique backstory.

The movie will release in theaters Dec. 15.
