If you were kids in the 90s, you more than likely played Twisted Metal. Peacock is hoping that their latest series of the same name can bring some action-packed nostalgia to the table. Is the series worth checking out? Let’s talk about it.

Twisted Metal follows a motor-mouthed outsider offered a chance at a better life, but only if he can successfully deliver a mysterious package across a post-apocalyptic wasteland. It stars Anthony Mackie in the lead role of John Doe, with supporting cast members in Stephanie Beatriz, Will Arnett, and Thomas Hayden Church.

One of the things that made Twisted Metal the game so much fun was the fact it was no none sense action-packed, violent fun. From the moment the pilot starts, you are engulfed in this world with a non-stop action sequence that is full of wild speed chases and cool kills.

Twisted Metal is exactly what it needs to be in being wild, crazy, and over the top

The series is led by Anthony Mackie, who seemed to be having the time of his life. I would be almost willing to bet that Mackie, like the rest of us excited to watch this show grew up playing this game. John Doe was a carefree, free-spirited guy living his best life as a delivery driver. He has some hilarious one-liners in this that will have you laughing.

My only complaint about the show was that it leaned too much into the story and tried to be meaningful or have a purpose more than it should’ve been. Thankfully, they didn’t do that too much because the action and the craziness of the game and the characters of the game are still there.

Speaking of the characters, the costume, production, and makeup departments all deserve massive praise for making them just like the video game. You can feel the nostalgia in their looks alone, and my goodness Sweet Tooth’s look was so much fun to watch. It was incredible to see, and the attention to detail was vital in making you invest in what you were watching.

Overall, Twisted Metal is exactly what it needs to be in being wild, crazy, and over the top with comedy, action, and nostalgia. As I mentioned, outside of leaning heavily on trying to make the story something, the series is full of fun, and I hope we get a second season.

Twisted Metal comes to Peacock on July 27, 2023.
