Updated Oct. 16, 2023 – Lopez vs Lopez has been a welcome addition in the comedy lineup on TV. Whatever episode is on, it’ sure to make you laugh! We can’t wait for the second season to see what else the Lopez family will be up to. With the Hollywood strikes, seeing what they’re up to has been delayed. But there’s some promising updates!

The series is created by showrunner Debby Wolfe. Taking on executive producing duties are actor George Lopez, Bruce Helford, Michael Rotenberg, and Katie Newman. Here’s everything we know about the sitcom’s second season ahead of its release!

Lopez vs Lopes season 2 is coming in 2024 following writers strike

We’ve known Lopez vs Lopez season 2 is happening since NBC announced the renewal back in May 2023. The great news was shared on May 12, 2023, which was only three days after the season 1 finale made its debut on TV. We don’t know how many episodes are planned, but it might be in the 10-15 episodes range vs the 22 episodes we got in the first season. This is because of the delay of production due to the strikes (more on that below).

Lopez vs Lopez season 2 will be coming out in either the midseason schedule or summer 2024. That means the release date could be coming at any point between January through August next year. While season 1 premiered in the fall of November 2022, the second season is different. Why is there a delay? Read on below.

Actors strike still ongoing

The reason we’re not getting the comedy in fall 2023, or in 2023 at all, is because of the writers strike and the actors strike. The Writers Guild of America (WGA) went on strike May 2, 2023. Since the series didn’t get a renewal until May 12, that means either no or barely any scripts had been written. But, things have turned around when it comes to the writers of our favorite shows.

On Sept. 25, 2023, the writers strike came to an end and writers were able to get back to work! The WGA and Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), who represents the big studios signed a new, three-year contract that’s in effect through May 1, 2026. That means work on the scripts of Lopez vs Lopez season 2 should be happening right now. And this is definitely the news we’ve been waiting so long to hear!

While it’s good news on the writers front, it’s unfortunately not the same for the actors strike which is still ongoing. The Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) have been on strike since July 14, 2023. And while they’d previously been in negotiations with the AMPTP, as of Oct. 12 those talks have stopped since “industry CEOs have walked away from the bargaining table,”per SAG-AFTRA on X. This means that even though the writers are back to work, the actors still can’t. We’ll have to wait and see if this will cause further delays for the new season.

NBC is not the only company to push release dates for its programs, the other big networks have also had to push their 2023 fall TV schedules as well. For example CBS initially released a schedule in May, which included the premiere of Young Sheldon season 7. The broadcaster shared a revised schedule for the fall which pushed its scripted shows, including Young Sheldon season 7, mostly to the midseason. If the strikes weren’t going on, Lopez vs Lopez season 2 would have premiered in fall 2023. But now, all we can do is wait to see what happens between the actors guild and studios.

Cast: Who can we expect to see return?

An official cast list has not been shared yet, but we expect all of the main cast to make a return. Those include of course the real-life and onscreen father-daughter duo we love to see, George Lopez and Mayan Lopez.

George is a stand-up comedian and actor, most known for his early 2000s ABC sitcom, George Lopez. This guy has been making us laugh for so long! His daughter Mayan hasn’t done much in the industry before the NBC comedy, except for two roles in Mr. Troop Mom and Handsome: A Netflix Mystery Movie. Also expected to return in season 2 are Selenis Levya, Brice Gonzalez, and more. We shared the list of actors we will probably see once again in season 2:

  • George Lopez as George
  • Mayan Lopez as Mayan
  • Selenis Leyva as Rosie
  • Brice Gonzalez as Chance
  • Matt Shively as Quinten
  • Al Madrigal as Oscar

What happened at the end of Lopez vs Lopez season 1? (where to watch)

In the season 1 finale, titled “Lopez vs Last Call,” we saw how George, as well as his family, had to come to terms with the fact that he’s an alcoholic and is struggling with drinking. This is an important storyline that I’m sure will continue in season 2. Also important was Mayan’s feelings about growing up as a child with divorced parents and the affect it had on her.

Cute little munchkin Chance tells his grandfather that he’s his hero, and this gets Rosie jealous. But, while George is the young boy’s hero, he tells his grandmother that she’s his angel. Aw! George begins A.A. meetings, and he makes a friend – Snoop Dogg. It will be interesting to see where these family dynamics go in the next chapter of the story.

Lopez vs Lopez season 1 is streaming on Peacock. When the second season debuts, it will air on television on NBC. New episodes will then be available to stream on Peacock the next day. And if you’re a George Lopez fan and want to rewatch the 2002 sitcom with the same name as the actor, all six seasons are streaming on Peacock.
